This is a replacement post for a full-time Consultant Haematologist to join our team of 5 Consultants at University hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust.

 Royal College Approval has been obtained for this post.

Main duties of the job

The post is that of a Consultant Haematologist to the Trust providing full clinical care of patients with blood disorders including Haematological malignancy, specialist advice on all aspects of haematology to colleagues, both within the Trust and Primary Care, Also providing clinical support for the laboratories at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Furness General Hospital.

You will be based at RLI however, you will provide on-call cover for all hospitals.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust achieved foundation status in 2010.  

Lancaster is a University City, close to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and Morecambe Bay.  The university provides cultural and sporting facilities.  Local educational facilities are excellent with some of the best secondary school education in the country.  The M6 makes travelling by road very easy.  Manchester is one hour’s drive away and London three hours by train. 

The Westmorland General Hospital is situated on the outskirts of Kendal, a market town close to the English Lake District. Driving time between the two hospitals is approximately 30 minutes. 

Furness General Hospital provides health care services to the 140,000 population based in the Furness peninsula and the surrounding part of South Cumbria.  The majority of the population served is based in Barrow and the surrounding district in the west. 

The area is one of outstanding natural beauty with excellent recreational facilities, particularly related to the sea, lakes, fells and countryside.  Housing costs within the area are relatively low. There are some excellent educational facilities in Lancaster. 

The University of Lancaster Medical School admits approximately 130 undergraduate medical students for each year. The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust takes responsibility throughout the five years of the degree for the provision of acute practice placements. 

 

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Medicine Care Group (within which Clinical haematology resides) encourages working towards a more integrated pattern of working on the three main sites i.e.. RLI, WGH and FGH. You will be expected to contribute to this process. Consultant Haematologists are on-call for clinical and laboratory advice across the whole trust and provide reciprocal cover for holidays and study leave.  

The post-holder has full clinical care for inpatients and outpatients and the clinics are open referral.  You will provide continuing responsibility for patients in  your charge and in partnership with colleagues working for the proper function of the department.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • FRCPath (Haematology) or equivalent and M/FRCP or equivalent are essential qualifications for this post.
  • Registered with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice and an accredited specialist in Haematology (or within 6 months of gaining CCT) or equivalent
  • ull and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
