Job overview

We are looking for a General Radiologist with a specialist interest – sub specialty is flexible to fit in with the needs of the Trust and the applicant’s interests.

We invite you to join a team of 16 Radiologists providing diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Service for North Lancashire and South Cumbria. We contribute to the  workload of the department, including CT, US, MRI and plain film reporting and participate in the on call rota (1:16). We outsource on call work from 8 pm (weekdays) and 5 pm (weekend and Bank holidays) to provide a more palatable and sustainable working pattern.

We have good admin support, highly integrated voice recognition (Dragon 11 Medical with HSS CRIS) and an active programme to refresh equipment. (3 new CT scanners, 3 new MR scanners and 16 new USS machines in the last 4 years). The PACS has been upgraded to a state of the art SECTRA system . A new SPECT CT system given approval at FGH with plans for a similar replacement in nuclear medicine at RLI

Main duties of the job

Whilst remaining general Radiologists, we all sub-specialise to a greater or lesser degree and report a share of general work whilst also working collaboratively to cover specific tumour work and other sub-specialties across the whole trust from our individual bases using a single PACS system. A shared contribution to the general work of the department would be expected from the successful applicant.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. 

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB (or equivalent).
  • FRCR (or equivalent)
  • Strong educational, qualification & professional track record.
  • On the GMC specialist register for Clinical Radiology and in possession of current license to practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching or training qualifications.

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Five years supervised training in an appropriate SpR equivalent training programme (or equivalent).
  • Broad radiology skills and experience - plain film, US, CT and MR.
  • Demonstrated ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients and contribute to on call.
  • Experience of offering expert clinical opinion on a range of problems.
  • Experience of evaluating own radiological practice and audit practices.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in UK.
  • Subspecialty interest to fit with the needs of the department
  • Experience of supervising Trainees.
  • Publication of audit results
  • Publication of research in peer reviewed journals.
  • Participation in clinical or laboratory research projects.

Skills, Ability & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to plan and develop the service to provide patient centred care.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise work
  • Ability to communicate appropriately in English (both in writing and verbally) with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, radiographers, nurses and other agencies.
  • Good standard of verbal and written English.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to plan strategically and work with the Trust’s partners.
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills.
  • Computer, PACS and VR software literate.
