Speech after Stroke Support Volunteer

Job overview
To provide support with communication to Speech After Stroke scheme (SASS) members either at a group or home setting. Various locations available including Maryport and Whitehaven
Must be 18y or above to apply.
Volunteers can request to be on inpatient wards in the Cumberland Infirmary, West Cumberland Hospital and Community Hospitals in North & West Cumbria.
Please note, this is an unpaid volunteer role and travel expenses can only be reimbursed from within the localised area.
Main duties of the job
This might be the role for you if:
- You have the confidence to chat to Speech After Stroke scheme members and their family either in a group setting or on a one to one basis.
- You enjoy group activities and have the confidence to speak to a group
- You are a good listener and have patience, as sometimes communicating with a scheme member can have its difficulties
- You can be discreet, when required
- You have an understanding of patient confidentiality and understand when there is a need to raise concerns to the SASS co-ordinator

What tasks can this role include?
- Building a relationship with the SASS members and families
- Assisting members with group activities
- Assisting making refreshments for our members
- Assisting members of the groups with mobilising to and from toilets, if required
- Building confidence within the group

Applicant requirements
The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable people and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
