Job overview

The Estates department at Royal Lancaster Infirmary is a group of highly skilled electrical and mechanical engineers, creative building craftsperson's, and dedicated support staff.

We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic person to join us as an apprentice advanced mechanical Engineer.

The training for the apprentice will held at Lancaster and Morecambe college for the duration of 4 years and there is an expectation to stay on and complete each stage of the apprenticeship.

This will be four days onsite and one day at college, during term time out of college will require full five days at work.

Annex 21 pay scale will entitle 

YR 1 ,60 % of the top of  band 5

YR 2, 65 % of the top of band 5

YR 3, 70 % of the top of band 5

YR 4, 75 % of the top of band 5

If you are an internal member of staff and your current salary is higher than the Annex 21, you will be entitled to pay protection until your pay meets or exceeds your current salary.  On completion and qualification of the apprenticeship you will be paid the first increment of band 5.

Main duties of the job

This is a highly rewarding role. Working under the Mechanical Team Leader, the successful candidate will embark on a challenging adventure, safely, efficiently, and with patient and staff safety at the heart of their focus.

Working as part of a team, and individually, you will be required to carry out mechanical maintenance work within acute and community NHS properties. This will be on heating and pressure systems, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, medical gases, and other healthcare related mechanical services.

The successful candidate must be able to self-motivate, work relatively unsupervised, and be a good communicator on all levels. Flexible working will be required where you will assist other trades and undertake other tasks to maintain the building services.

The successful candidate will be required to join an on-call team to provide an out of hours emergency response - after an initial training period. 

This post is based at Royal Lancaster Hospital, Lancaster 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, and Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. 

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses. 

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Driving licence (B)
  • Maths & English qualifications grade 4
Desirable criteria
  • City and Guild qualifications in relevant subjects.
  • CP training in related subjects

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of safe systems of work in an engineering, construction, or manufacturing industry.
  • Experience of fault-finding on large-scale plant and equipment
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of BMS systems
  • Experience of hospital systems and equipment, policies and procedures especially HTM’s and relevant DOH guidance.

Skills, ability & knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with other members of the department, other (non technical) Trust staff, patients, visitors, public utilities and emergency services as required.
  • Ability to deal with information sensitively and confidentially.
  • Computer literate
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to lead/train others.
