An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team as a B6 Senior Radiographer running the GP X-Ray Imaging service at the Plymouth Community Diagnostic Centre. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic HCPC registered Radiographer to join our dynamic senior imaging team at UHPT. Applications are welcomed from Radiographers with demonstrable post graduate experience within an NHS acute setting as a general radiographer with proven excellent clinical knowledge of all aspects of radiography. 

The GP X-Ray Imaging Service at UHPT encompasses six peripheral imaging units, over a wide geographical area, a brand new PCDC building, as well as on site provision at Derriford Hospital. Successful candidates will be able to gain a wide range of experience in service improvement, leadership, team management, and development of staff.

This role also assists the Lead Radiographer to oversee an effective service line framework of Clinical Governance at the PCDC.

The PCDC will operate Monday - Sunday 0800-2000 at Colin Campbell Court, Plymouth. 

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

  • To deliver a high quality, effective and efficient radiographic service to the highest professional standards. To become actively involved within the X-Ray modality where you will carry out duties commensurate with a senior radiographic post within the service.
  • To support the day to day running of the PCDC.
  • To maintain specialist area competencies.
  • To support and create effective learning placements within the organisation in line with national agendas and Higher Education Institutions. Supervising, assessing and supporting students and apprentices in the department.
  • To support an Agenda for Change compliant 24-hour 7-day roster, including bank/public holidays as required by the needs to the service including rotation to peripheral sites.
  • To support the Area Lead Radiographer in planning, co-coordinating, delivering, developing and evaluating the PCDC X-Ray Imaging service provided to patients on a day-to-day basis.
  • To support the Area Lead Radiographer in delivering a robust and effective Clinical Governance framework within the PCDC.
  • To work as the RPS of the PCDC for the two x-ray rooms.

  • Contribute to the day to day running of the PCDC  by planning, organising and prioritising the workload thus ensuring an efficient and effective throughput of patients.
  • Take a lead role within x-ray at the PCDC.
  • Respond to the changing needs of the service daily by providing a flexible approach to the working day, thus maintaining the existing excellent standard of service and the continuing promotion of good working relationships. The work pattern will be unpredictable due to frequent interruptions and problem solving. Concentration will need to be maintained for long periods when operating equipment etc.
  • Interpret and follow local and Trust Policies and Procedures, following accepted protocols and professional codes of conduct to manage own and departmental workload. Be able to manage the pressures of accommodating emergency work in addition to planned sessions.
  • Support and enhance the continual quality initiative and ensure a “quality first” approach to all aspects of work despite the pressures of time and volume of workload.
  • Be responsible for evaluating and maintaining the standard of work produced in your area ensuring it is of a high quality and taking corrective action where there may be problems.
  • Be able to assess when guidance and support is required in a particular situation.
  • Be responsible for the safe use of expensive, highly complex and specialist equipment.
  • Ensure that equipment faults are reported, following this up where equipment is out of use to ensure it is repaired in a timely manner. Liaising with medical physics experts as appropriate thus ensuring that equipment is safe to use for both staff and patients.
  • Be responsible for informing modality leads, clinical and non-clinical staff, and any patients affected by any equipment faults, and ensure that the equipment is safe to use for both staff and patients
  • Assess the Radiation risk to the patient and ensure it is kept as low as reasonably practicable (the ALARP principle).
  • Assess information on X-ray referrals to ensure it is relevant and can be authorised as justified under IR(ME)R 2017.
  • Interpret clinical information to support the requested examination. Follow departmental clinical protocols whilst employing professional judgement to ensure the most appropriate examination for the patient is carried out.  You will be expected to query an examination if you believe clinical indications require it, giving advice to more junior members of staff where needed.
  • Electronically authorise x-ray imaging referrals in accordance with department protocol.

Person specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstratable postgraduate experience as a general radiographer and sound clinical proven knowledge of radiography.
  • Must have demonstrated an aptitude in, or sustained interest in clinical education.
  • Proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of mentorship or practice assessment, education and development.
Desirable criteria
  • Proven awareness of NHS policies and documents.
  • Demonstrable experience of planning and organising complex activities requiring the formulation and adjustment of plans.
  • Demonstrable service improvement project experience.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current HCPC registration
  • BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Student assessor qualification/training
  • Post graduate qualification linked to your specialist area, or willingness to obtain one.

Aptitude and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Proven ability to accurately position patients thus ensuring a good radiographic technique.
  • Able to communicate effectively at different levels of an organisation in both verbal and written form, whilst demonstrating fluency, clarity and effectiveness.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to interpret the Trust’s policy on Violence and Aggression in order to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and colleagues.
  • Excellent research and audit skills.
