Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen across the Emergency Floor for a patient flow co-ordinator.

We are looking for an enthusiastic patient flow co-ordinator to join the Emergency Floor.  You will provide 24/7 admin support to the Nurse in Charge and Clinical Team to focus on the flow of patients throughout the Emergency Department. Liaising with various stakeholders within the trust to ensure a smooth patient journey. 

You will be joining a motivated, dynamic team that operates 365 days a year providing patient flow co-ordinator cover 24 hours a day. This includes weekends, bank holidays and Christmas/New year cover. Shift patterns can be flexible, we have a variety of shifts available.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to deliver a friendly, professional service. Accuracy and attention to detail are vital in this role, together with the ability to multi-task in a busy environment.  Working 20.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

  • You will work closely with the Nurse in Charge (NIC) to ensure a smooth flow of patients out of the Emergency Department.
  • Review the number of referrals/admits to other Wards and from the ambulance service (SWASFT), anticipate and escalate any issues that would cause delays in receiving patients.
  • Link with wards to confirm availability of beds noted by site management.
  • Work with the ED nursing team to ensure the transfer and/or discharge of patients occurs in a timely manner.
  • Provide clear and concise communication to the nurse in charge, silver doctor, operational team and nursing staff, using tact and diplomacy to encourage effective working across the team and with colleagues.
  • Support members of the multi-disciplinary team with patient discharge arrangements e.g. booking transport, liaising with Operational Support Workers, arranging porters.

  • Basic computer skills
  • Good decision-making skills
  • Previous proven admin/clerical/reception experience
  • Extracting information/ listening skills

  • Working in a busy, acute environment

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of general education to include GCSE in Maths and English or equivalent
  • NVQ 111 in Customer Care or equivalent relevant experience
  • Accurate typing to ensure a high level of data quality
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of understanding medical terminology
