Job overview

As a Porter, you’ll be expected to carry out a variety of tasks throughout your shift. You’ll often be on the move, walking long distances while transporting patients, equipment, furniture, waste, laundry, notes, specimens, and more across our Trust sites.

You’ll provide a thorough portering service for the Facilities Operations department, ensuring everything is moved safely and that equipment is cleaned and checked for faults.

You’ll work closely with patients, visitors, and colleagues, always maintaining a polite and courteous manner. Plus, you’ll be involved in our onsite courier service, helping with deliveries around the Trust sites.

Main duties of the job

  • You’ll provide a comprehensive porter service for our Facilities department.

  • You’ll ensure the safe movement of patients, equipment, furniture, waste, laundry, notes, specimens, and more around our Trust sites.

  • You’ll make sure equipment is cleaned and regularly checked for any faults.

  • You’ll work alongside patients, visitors, and colleagues in a polite and courteous manner.

  • You’ll take part in our Trust’s courier service, which includes community sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To ensure that patients are moved around the hospital in a safe and professional manner by whatever means (Stretcher, Wheelchair, Trolley etc.)
  • To ensure that items such as mail, patient notes, waste, laundry, medical gas cylinders and laboratory specimens are collected and delivered safely around the Trust sites with appropriate handling equipment.
  • Deliver hospital supply cages to wards and departments and collect and return empty cages
  • To maintain daily vehicle sheets and submit to supervisor and maintain cleanliness of vehicles
  • To ensure that the department’s equipment i.e. trolleys, wheelchairs, bed movers etc. are cleaned regularly and any faults are reported to the supervisor immediately.
  • To ensure that Wheelchairs and Trolleys are cleaned/disinfected between patients as necessary
  • To provide a portering service to the residential areas regarding delivery and sorting of mail, linen rubbish dirty laundry, movement of furniture, stores and equipment etc.

  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills
  • Willingness to undertake training relevant to the post
  • Full Driving License
