Consultant Vascular Surgeon Dorset & Wiltshire Vascular Network

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

As University Hospitals Dorset we are a three site acute trust with ‘university hospital’ status through our partnership with Bournemouth University, working with an annual budget of £730m.

We offer highly regarded health services, employing some 10,000 staff. Our ambitious £500m transformation programme is well on the way to delivering state-of-the-art facilities over the next two years to meet the current and future healthcare needs of the populations we serve.

In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with over seven miles of sandy beaches you’ll find inspirational opportunities to achieve your perfect work/life balance. With the New Forest and the Purbecks on our doorstep, we’re also less than three hours from London by road or train. The thriving towns of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch give way to idyllic villages and unspoilt landscapes just minutes from our hospitals.

We believe that having a diverse workforce, and allowing people to be themselves, is essential in ensuring we offer an inclusive, welcoming and productive place to work.

We especially welcome applications from minority groups in the community who may be underrepresented in our workforce.

At UHD our active staff network groups are the Women's Network, Black Asian Minority Ethnic Group (BAME), Pride Network, European (EU), Pro Ability Staff Network, and the Armed Forces Support Group.

As a Trust we are proudly signed up to the Disability Confident and Armed Forces Covenant guaranteed interview schemes.

We are aware that some candidates may choose to use AI tools to support the preparation of their application. While this is not discouraged, we kindly remind applicants that submissions should remain an honest and accurate representation of your own experience and suitability. Personal integrity is an important part of the recruitment process.

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Dorset and Wiltshire Vascular Network as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon.

You will be based at Royal Bournemouth Hospital site, but will be expected to provide planned clinical sessions across other Network sites, predominantly at Poole General and Christchurch Hospitals. You will be expected to travel to other sites within the Network where this is required on an emergency basis.

The Dorset and Wiltshire Vascular Network provides elective and emergency Vascular services for the population of Dorset and South Wiltshire with a presence at Dorchester, Bournemouth, Poole, and Salisbury hospitals. The 24/7 emergency service is based at Royal Bournemouth Hospital and is supported by a 24/7 Specialist Interventional Radiology service.

The job plan provided assumes a full time commitment. Candidates wishing to work part-time or job-share will be considered. Applicants should be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within 6 months of obtaining their CCT in this speciality.

Main duties of the job

This is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon post within the DWVN, based at our Main Arterial Centre (MAC) in Royal Bournemouth Hospital. The ability to work across non-arterial sites within the DWVN (Dorchester, Poole, and Salisbury) is essential as is the ability to use your own transport to travel between sites. DWVN also provides some emergency Vascular cover (on the Bournemouth site) for Jersey patients.

Vascular Emergency cover across DWVN is provided 24/7 from our MAC in Bournemouth. The 1 in 8 on-call rota (internal prospective cover) is organised in a ‘Consultant of the Week’ model where Consultants are freed from elective activity whilst on-call.

This post will be paired with one of the existing experienced DWVN consultants in order to share a weekly all day elective theatre list, enabling some “buddy” operating for major surgical cases and expansive case mix experience. Outpatient clinics will be based in Royal Bournemouth, Poole, and Christchurch although you may be asked to cover clinical activity elsewhere within the Network in exceptional circumstances.

There is a well-established weekly Network MDT covering all arterial work, attended by surgeons, interventional radiologists, vascular anaesthetists, stroke consultants, advanced nurse practitioners and resident medical staff.  In addition, consultants support daily ward rounds and participate actively in Trust educational and governance activities including regular half day clinical governance sessions.
