Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Consultant Haematologist to join our dynamic Clinical Haematology team at Dorset County Hospital.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Haematologist with a special interest in Haemostasis to contribute to a high-quality, patient-centred service. Main duties of the job

  • Conduct outpatient clinics and ward rounds in line with the agreed job plan.
  • Provide clinical and laboratory advice to hospital and primary care colleagues.
  • Lead on haemostasis-related issues across the Trust, including support via the GP advice and guidance system.
  • Oversee care for:
    • Patients with Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP)
    • Haemochromatosis patients requiring annual review
    • Joint obstetric haemostasis clinics with obstetricians
  • Participate in blood film and bone marrow reporting, including combined sign-out sessions in accordance with UKAS standards.
  • Collaborate with paediatricians in the provision of paediatric haematology services.
  • Provide laboratory supervision during working hours and be available in exceptional circumstances outside normal hours.

Person specification

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via; CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6mths of interview CESR or European Community Rights
  • An appropriate higher surgical/medical qualification

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • 5 years clinical experience in Clinical & Laboratory Haematology at Specialist Registrar level or equivalent
  • Experience demonstrating potential ability to cope with the demands of a DGH based Consultant
  • Experience in a special interest that will complement those existing in the department

Current Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Willingness and ability to fulfil the general service elements of the job description
  • Evidence of the clinical skills required to fulfill the specialty and sub-specialty elements of the job as in the job description and technical specification.

Team Working and Service Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of leadership and service development. Ability to develop effective working relationships and team working

Understanding and Participation in Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of understanding of clinical governance. Knowledge of and direct involvement in audit. Knowledge of principles of research and evidence of involvement in research.

Management Training, Organisational Skills and Strategic Vision

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of general management training and skills appropriate for the post. Evidence of ability to contribute to the strategic direction of the Trust. Knowledge of organisational aspects of the NHS.

Teaching and communication

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of teaching experience and abilities appropriate to the post. Ability to present effectively to an audience Ability to communicate effectively.
