University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust logo

Deputy Head of Brachytherapy Physics

Band 8a

As University Hospitals Dorset we are a three site acute trust with ‘university hospital’ status through our partnership with Bournemouth University, working with an annual budget of £730m.

We offer highly regarded health services, employing some 10,000 staff. Our ambitious £250m estates programme is well on the way to delivering state-of-the-art facilities over the next two years to meet the current and future healthcare needs of the populations we serve.

In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with over seven miles of sandy beaches you’ll find inspirational opportunities to achieve your perfect work/life balance. With the New Forest and the Purbecks on our doorstep, we’re also less than three hours from London by road or train. The thriving towns of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch give way to idyllic villages and unspoilt landscapes just minutes from our hospitals.

We believe that having a diverse workforce, and allowing people to be themselves, is essential in ensuring we offer an inclusive, welcoming and productive place to work.

We especially welcome applications from minority groups in the community who may be underrepresented in our workforce.

At UHD our active staff network groups are the Women's Network, Black Asian Minority Ethnic Group (BAME), Pride Network, European (EU), Pro Ability Staff Network, and the Armed Forces Support Group.

As a Trust we are proudly signed up to the Disability Confident and Armed Forces Covenant guaranteed interview schemes.

Job overview

We are looking to recruit an experienced radiotherapy physicist to come and join our team here in the Radiotherapy Physics Department based at Poole Hospital.

The successful candidate will support the Head of Brachytherapy Physics in the management, compliance, staff training and development of the brachytherapy physics service.

The postholder will work closely with the physicists, dosimetrists, clinicians and team of dedicated brachytherapy radiographers who run the service.

The brachytherapy service at Poole Hospital offers treatment for gynaecological (vault and cervix) and prostate (HDR and LDR), with the intention to offer skin and oesophageal treatments in the future.

The HDR service uses the Elekta Flexitron afterloader, with gynae treatments planned with Oncentra Masterplan software, HDR prostate planned with Oncentra Prostate and LDR prostate planned using Variseed. Mosaiq is used throughout the department as the record and verify system.

We are currently the only centre in the UK utilising full custom seed train loading for LDR prostate brachytherapy, delivering this service to >70 patients per year.

The external beam service has three linear accelerators (Varian Truebeams) with a fourth linac (Varian Truebeam) situated at the Robert White Cancer Centre in Dorchester. External beam treatment planning is done using Eclipse.

Main duties of the job

As Deputy Head of Brachytherapy Physics and an appointed Medical Physics Expert (MPE), participate in and help coordinate all physics aspects of the Brachytherapy service:

  • management of all physics aspects of the service
  • attendance during theatre sessions (HDR and LDR prostate)
  • treatment planning system commissioning and QA programs
  • brachytherapy equipment commissioning and QA programs
  • staff training, recording of competencies
  • audit and reporting of quality, safety and performance
  • future developments of the brachytherapy service for existing and new treatment sites
