Job overview
This is a great opportunity to start your career in a practical, hands-on role while gaining a recognised qualification. We’re looking for an Apprentice Painter and Decorator to join our Estates team at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust.
You’ll work alongside experienced staff, learning the skills of the trade while studying towards a Level 2 qualification through a local further education college. The course is fully funded, and you’ll gain real work experience across a range of NHS buildings throughout Sussex.
Our sites span across Sussex, and we offer flexibility in your base location—this role can be based at one of several sites within the county.
Main duties of the job
Working under the guidance of qualified decorators, you’ll support a variety of decorating and maintenance tasks, including:

Surface preparation, painting and wallpapering

Minor plastering and surface repairs

Keeping workspaces clean, tidy, and safe

Recording work details and learning how to use digital systems (CAFM)

Assisting with maintenance checks and materials stock control

Attending college regularly and completing coursework and assessments

Following all safety guidelines and Trust policies
You’ll need to be willing to learn, take instruction, and work well as part of a team. Occasional weekend or shift work may be required.

Qualifications and/or professional registration
Essential criteria
- Agreeable to studying on the apprenticeship programme L3.
Desirable criteria
- GCSE grade 4 or equivalent qualification in Maths and English or a willingness to continue studying to pass
- Driving Licence.
Experience

- Proven ability to work in a clean, tidy and safe manner.
- Proven ability to work with others.
Skills and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Willingness to learn the legislation applicable to the position.
- Ability to take and accept instructions from others.
