Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Advanced Pharmacist – Paediatric Gastroenterology to join the Pharmacy team at UHSussex. This is a new role developed to strengthen paediatric gastroenterology and PN services.

This senior clinical leadership post provides expert pharmacy input for children with complex and long term conditions including intestinal failure, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, liver disease, cystic fibrosis with gastrointestinal involvement and complex nutritional needs. The post holder will lead pharmaceutical care for paediatric gastroenterology and PN across inpatient and outpatient settings, working within MDTs across wards, clinics and homecare services. 

The post holder will provide deputy support to the Lead Pharmacist for C&W , contributing to senior decision making and service resilience. This role requires close collaboration with clinical teams, commissioners, regional networks and external partners.

Applications are welcomed from Band 7 pharmacists seeking progression. Appointment at Band 8a is dependent upon completion of an FS2 postgraduate diploma or equivalent.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide expert clinical pharmacy leadership for paediatric gastroenterology and parenteral nutrition (PN) across inpatient, outpatient and homecare settings, supporting children with complex long term gastrointestinal and nutritional conditions

  • Act as lead specialist pharmacist for paediatric gastroenterology medicines including biologics, immunomodulators, specialist nutritional therapies and PN, ensuring safe, effective and evidence based use in line with national and local guidance

  • Work as an independent prescriber, or work towards this, initiating, adjusting and monitoring treatment within agreed scope of practice, including high risk medicines and treatment related toxicities

  • Provide advanced clinical input to MDTs through ward rounds, specialist MDTs, clinics and transition of care meetings, advising clinicians, patients and families

  • Lead development and review of clinical guidelines, protocols and pathways, and take responsibility for governance, audit and risk management

  • Lead service development including pharmacist led clinics, outpatient and homecare services, business case development, medicines optimisation, oversight of high cost medicines and budgets

  • Supervise and develop pharmacy staff including Band 6 and 7 pharmacists, technicians

  • Work collaboratively across sites and with external partners including regional networks, commissioners and homecare providers

  • Deputise for the Lead Pharmacist for C&W
