Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

 

Job overview

We are looking for a Locum Consultant Urological Surgeons here at at MSE Hospitals with Broomfield Hospital as the base site. Our Urology Service has been given the exciting opportunity to expand across all three sites and support our growth in referrals and build on our fantastic team. Consultant to be confident to carry out general urology duties and with an interest to complement the department, such as management of superficial bladder cancer, management of superficial bladder cancer or paediatric Urology.

The purpose of this post is to provide and co-ordinate an effective general urology service and to develop a sub-specialty interest that complements the department. They are also expected to take part in all departmental activities, including on-call, audit and teaching. 

Essex’s first medical school opened in Chelmsford at Anglia Ruskin University in 2018. The Trust therefore has redoubled its focus on education, as the students are now undergoing clinical rotations at the Trust’s sites. It is thus an essential criterion, that the prospective applicant, has an interest in education.

Main duties of the job

Please see below and overview of the main duties entailed within the role:

  • To provide outpatient urology clinic services; this may include minor procedures
  • To perform independent elective and emergency operating including day case surgery
  • To undertake speciality clinics and participate as a core member in Urology MDTs.
  • Any responsibility which relates to a special interest;
  • Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures;
  • To provide consultant level Urology on call duties (1 in 11). This will include on site daytime cover and post take ward round, and to contribute to the pelvic urology on call rota.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCS (Urol) or equivalent (e.g FEBU)
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) at time of interview
Desirable criteria
  • ATLS Certificate

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Subspecialty training in andrology surgery
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty.
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, other specialties and support staff
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team

Personal and People Development

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take responsibility and show evidence of leadership
Desirable criteria
  • Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal.
