Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Pharmacy Technician to support the delivery of a high-quality clinical pharmacy service at our modern purpose-built facilities at Colchester Hospital. You will work closely with clinical colleagues to provide an integrated and efficient service and will play a key role within the Pharmacy Education and Training team.
The role is predominantly dispensary-based and involves delivering education, training, and mentorship to pharmacy colleagues at all levels, supporting consistent standards of practice across the department.
Our friendly pharmacy team are dedicated to nurturing, mentoring and developing our staff to reach their full potential. You will be key in ensuring that all aspects of this practice are delivered and achieved effectively, supporting and ensuring colleagues meet trust and regional standards. As well as direct one-to-one training, the department provides pharmacy forums, tutorials and weekly ICS/ESNEFT delivered educational workshops. We support personal development plans, smart objective setting and opportunities for study.
If not already qualified, you will be supported to complete the Patient Consultation Skills course for Pharmacy Technicians and progress to the Certificate in Medicines Management for Pharmacy Technicians.
Main duties of the job
- Be the lead Educational Supervisor for Stores and Clinical staff, providing training and mentoring within the dispensaries to Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians (PTPTs) Foundation Pharmacists and new staff of all grades.
- Provide training plans for new dispensary staff in liaison with dispensary managers. To regularly review these plans, evaluate progress and provide constructive feedback to both the trainee and their line manager.
- Provide an advanced level clinical pharmacy service to clinical areas in line with the Pharmacy Key Performance indicators and agreed clinical standards.
- Liaise with external education providers, including UEA, to support technician development including arranging and co-ordinating CPD, ACT and MR qualifications.
- Work collaboratively with clinical teams to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
- Assist with pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician placements and assessment schedules
- Participate in education and training working groups and represent ESNEFT Pharmacy at network

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GPhC registered
- Medicines Reconciliation trained (either local or regional)
- Regional Accredited Checking Technician qualification
- B-Tech in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Certificate in Medicines Management
- Educational supervisor
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous extensive hospital experience inclusive of Clinical Pharmacy / ward based practice
- Demonstrated experience of multi-disciplinary working
- Previous experience of educating and training other staff
- Handling of high risk medicines
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Computer Literacy
- Medicines Management
- Clinical knowledge of Medication Safety and Governance issues relevant to Pharmacy practice
- Understanding of pharmacy organisational/structure (local/national)
- Understanding of the relationship of the pharmacy department to the wider multidisciplinary team
- Good pharmaceutical knowledge
- Teaching aids available to facilitate educational practices
- Understanding of excel spreadsheets
