Job overview
We are looking for applicants who are highly motivated and appreciate the dedication and commitment required to apply through the portfolio pathway. The applicant should demonstrate both understanding of Portfolio Pathway and have knowledge of the application process and evidence required.
The aim of the programme is to provide a structured pathway that mirrors the RCoA curriculum and support the applicant to gather knowledge, skills and evidence in both clinical and non-clinical elements including subspecialty areas, to support the Portfolio Pathway application to gain entry onto the specialist register.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will:
- Work with colleagues to provide a service with the highest standard of care
- Work with the multi-professional team following care pathways and clinical guidelines
- Follow and maintain good working practices
- Offer educational, clinical support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary
- Ensure appropriate information is made available to staff to measure clinical performance and enable meaningful benchmarks to be established and evaluated within your area of responsibility
- Ensure there is a robust process for reviewing the quality of services provided, explaining the causes of success and failure and ensure the highest standards are maintained
- Provide a role model of professional leadership, which underpins the corporate values and behaviours agreed by the organisation, ensuring these are understood and demonstrated by the medical workforce within your area and take remedial action where poor behaviour are demonstrated
- Participate in the appraisal of medical staff within the department in line with the Trust’s agree policy

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with all surgical specialties concerned with the Anaesthetic Directorate. Personal arrangements will be required to maintain a logbook and evidence of continuing professional development through an established appraisal system. The post holder should maintain a logbook in accordance with RCoA.
- Provide safe anaesthesia to a wide range of surgical specialties, under the direct or more distant supervision of a consultant. Two consultants are present on site until 2200 hrs Monday to Friday for critical care and general/maternity emergencies and during the day at the weekend.
- There are 5 tiers of on-call junior doctors for anaesthetics with a primary responsibility to the Critical Care Unit, Obstetric Unit or Emergency Theatre and the on-call frequency is currently 1:8.

Responsibilities will include the supervision of junior staff, teaching, training and participation in departmental governance and quality improvement meetings.

Essential
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration with license to practice at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
- Recognised primary medical qualification (MBBS, MBChB or equivalent)
- Post graduate qualification in anaesthesia such as Primary FRCA or equivalent (Appendix A)
- Minimum of 5 years post-graduate experience in anaesthesia
- 2 year experience of working in the UK in clinical anaesthesia
- Completion of Stage 1 training or equivalent in the UK (with supporting evidence at Portfolio Pathway application standard)
- Valid ALS
- Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice)
- A confident person who has the ability to manage, motivate and teach the junior medical staff
- Capacity to manage time and prioritise workload, balance urgent & important demands, follow instructions
- Understands the principles of Quality Improvement in Healthcare
Desirable criteria
- Final FRCA
- Higher degree, e.g.MD/PhD CCT from the training authority if completed training overseas
- EPALS or equivalent
- ATLS or equivalent
- Exposure to a wide variety of complex surgical cases
- Experience in sub-specialty areas of Anaesthesia
- UK obstetric anaesthesia on-call duties
- RCoA 2021 curriculum Stage 2 and Stage 3 HALO evidence
- Other subspecialist interests (with supporting evidence at Portfolio Pathway level)
- Clear plan for continued professional development
