Job overview

The Haematology laboratory at Ipswich is looking for an enthusiastic, and well-motivated person to join the team as a Biomedical Scientist.

You will join the team of rotating Biomedical Scientist staff, contributing to all areas of Haematology laboratory diagnostic work and developing a broad range of skills.

You must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and should preferably have experience of working at registrant level in a Haematology laboratory.

You will join a friendly and busy MHRA and UKAS compliant hospital laboratory who are committed to the training and development of our staff.  We are IBMS accredited training laboratory for registration and specialist portfolios.

We are equipped with Grifols, Sysmex XNs and ACL TOPS analysers.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake testing and processing of biomedical specimens, analysis and entering of results onto the compute
  • To work flexibly in reflection of service needs this may include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 days per week service
  • Supervises and/or trains less experienced staff in own area of work and competency
  • The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals.  This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions
  • Maintain and promote professional image of the Pathology Department

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent
  • Evidence of Continual Professional Development
  • Additional appropriate specialist qualification if required.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Theoretical knowledge and practical experience of Biomedical procedures gained through BSc or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Practical experience of working in a Biomedical Science laboratory
  • Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems
  • Knowledge/performance of Risk Assessments
  • Previous relevant experience of working in the NHS
  • European Computer Driving Licence or equivalent
