This role is offered on a permanent basis. The hours are part-time, 30 hours per week.

An excited opportunity has arisen on Greyfriars Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for an experienced, compassionate and motivated Senior Occupational Therapist. 

Greyfriars Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 10 bedded mixed unit which provides care for those people who require a period of increased supervision and intensive input as a result of acute mental health problems. Greyfriars is situated within Wotton Lawn Hospital a 88 bedded acute In-Patient Unit for Working Age Adults with a range of complex mental health conditions. Wotton Lawn has 4 acute wards, and a fully equipped Therapy Department (Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Health & Exercise).

The Therapy Department within Wotton Lawn Hospital provides a 7-day service. The post involves having a responsibility for devising and providing Occupational Therapy intervention to in-patient service users with complex mental health needs within Greyfriars PICU. This will incorporate the principles of Recovery and Social Inclusion, to ensure effective and safe discharge planning. The post holder will also have responsibility for delegating tasks as outlined in individual Occupational Therapy intervention plans.

Main duties of the job

The post holder should be able to demonstrate effective clinical reasoning skills, apply theory to practice and communicate effectively with patients, their carer's and colleagues alike.

Provide specialist Occupational Therapy Assessment and Treatment to individuals with complex Mental Health needs, who may also have Learning Disabilities and Physical health challenges.

Use the Model of Human Occupation, and associated assessment tools, within clinical practice, and to support clinical reasoning.

Ensure risks associated with intervention and environment are assessed and managed in collaboration with MDT.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibility for providing and prioritising specialist occupational therapy provision to 
support promotion of patient independence, improving social interaction, promoting wellness 
and quality of life, and to support safe and effective discharge planning.  
 Responsibility to ensure prioritisation and provision of all statutory occupational therapy 
input, including risk and safety assessments, specialist assessment of complex needs and, 
intervention and discharge planning. 
 Assist the unit manager and EAP team lead in the clinical practice development of the EAP 
Team, Physiotherapy, Exercise and Health, Occupational Therapy and Activity Coordinators.  
 Responsibility for prescribing equipment and other therapy resources arising from 
assessment of patients’ needs. 
 Work flexible hours to meet service needs across the seven-day service. 
 Work as a part of the wider Inpatient Occupational Therapy Team, which may require 
movement to other areas to provide clinical cover and support.

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in an acute in patient setting
  • Completion of relevant preceptorship programme
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching and presentation experience

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Occupational Therapist Formal Teaching and assessing course (completed or commencement date known)
  • Appraisal Skills (appraisee within 3 months as required)
  • Risk Assessment and Management (within 3 months)
Desirable criteria
  • Management of Violence and Aggression (within 3 months)
  • Supervision Skills (Clinical)

Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Medical Emergency Response Team Training (equivalent to immediate life support)
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of MHA, MCA and other legal aspects of mental health care
  • Knowledge of PICU assessment criteria
  • Clinical Supervisory Skills
  • a good working knowledge of the Care Programme Approach
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant Occupational Therapy assessments
Desirable criteria
  • Working Knowledge of the Trust and care Group Clinical Guidelines, Policies and Procedures
  • Awareness of NICE Guidelines (and other national guidelines) relating to working age adult mental health
  • Awareness of health and Well-being recommendations.
