Job overview

We are seeking an experienced, motivated and clinically respected Obstetric Ultrasound Lead (Band 8a) to provide professional, clinical and operational leadership for our Obstetric Ultrasound service.

This is a senior specialty management role within the Radiology Directorate, working closely with the Non-Obstetric Ultrasound Modality Lead, Women & Children’s Division, maternity services and multidisciplinary colleagues to deliver a high‑quality, safe, and effective obstetric ultrasound service across the Trust.

The postholder will combine expert clinical knowledge with strong leadership and service improvement skills, supporting delivery of national screening requirements, quality standards and strategic service development.

Additional working pattern details: Additional band 7 scanning hours available to make up to 1 WTE

 

Main duties of the job

- Provide professional and clinical leadership for the Obstetric Ultrasound service, ensuring safe, effective and patient‑centred care

- Responsible for managing daily obstetric ultrasound operations, ensuring adherence to national maternity screening requirements and modality governance.

- Collaborate with Women & Children’s leads to oversee staff, facilities, and resource allocation.

- Support efficient, effective, and safe service delivery.

- Lead policy and service development & improvement, including equipment procurement within modality.

- Member of the Radiology Management team, overseeing strategy, operations, and safety; deputises for the Ultrasound lead as required.

- Provide practical assistance, technical advice, and clinical support as required.

- Responsible for delivering of all national maternity screening targets related to scanning.

- Capable of carrying out diverse examinations within the clinical specialty for various patient groups, independently or alongside multidisciplinary team members, while adhering to professional, departmental, and legal standards. Utilising available clinical information, ensure the selection of suitable imaging techniques aligns with best practice and produces diagnostic-quality images.

- Take part in the provision of a 24-hour service working weekends and bank holidays as required.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc or equivalent in relevant area of practice
  • Relevant professional registration (HCPC/NMC registration or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • MSc or equivalent in Obstetric Ultrasound

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Significant post qualification experience in Obstetric Ultrasound
  • Strong understanding of national screening requirements, governance and quality standards
  • Ability to work under pressure with an unpredictable workload
  • Excellent communication, organisational and decision making skills
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of own level of responsibility, including when working with complexity, risk, uncertainty and incomplete information.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the requirements of IR(ME)R and IRR and CQC requirements
Desirable criteria
  • Take a lead role in weekly MDT meetings, presenting screening cases and aiding decision making in further management of patient care.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of using departmental computerised patient systems –PACS/CRIS
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Managing Obstetric Ultrasound department
