Job overview

This position is based in the Microbiology Department and involves the analysis of a range of body fluids including blood, urine, faeces, mycology and swabs to assist in the diagnosis of disease and contributes to the clinical care of patients.

Tasks involve the running of analysers including maintenance, reagent preparation, quality control, reporting and verification of results and troubleshooting analyser and result issues.

Samples must be prioritised according to urgency ensuring all priority samples are expedited and sent to the section for analysis at the earliest opportunity.

Main duties of the job

  • To analyse pathology samples using routine and complex diagnostic procedures.
  • Undertake laboratory investigations and procedures in various sections of the laboratory on a rotational basis as demand dictates.
  • To report analyser results as appropriate and to discuss any errors or issues with a senior BMS
  • Perform routine operative maintenance on laboratory instruments and undertake corrective maintenance and troubleshooting when appropriate.
  • Prepare quality control material and collate returned results.
  • Check that quality control results on analytical procedures are within the stated ranges, in accordance with laboratory policy.
  • To maintain the adequate storage of samples after analysis and their correct disposal at the appropriate time.
  • To maintain adequate stock and ensure accurate batch receipt and acceptance of stock into use.

Training and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE’s in Maths and English equivalent to A-C
  • A Level in a science
  • BSc in a Biological Science subject
Desirable criteria
  • Masters degree in Science
  • Minimum Second class honours degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Laboratory experience
  • Knowledge of the theory behind PCR testing
  • Experience of performing quality assurance processes
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS pathology laboratory experience

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Methodical approach to following protocols and procedures.
  • Good Manual dexterity
  • Prepared to handle clinical samples
