We are looking to appoint a Consultant Physician for our Acute Medicine department. The Trust sees this appointment as a key part of an exciting opportunity to develop an innovative approach to acute medical care that places unscheduled care as the central function of the Trust in collaboration with local community partners.
This post will support the existing Consultants in Acute Medicine at Hampshire Hospitals. It will be pivotal in delivering a consultant lead service for our Emergency Medical Assessment Units. It will bolster the current model of care provided by Acute Medicine specialists and increase the scope and the quality of our front-line service.
This is a 12 PA post, which can be adjusted to individual needs.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be expected to:
- Join the Acute Medical team which includes taking part in posttake ward rounds in McGill Unit (AMU) and deliver the Trusts urgent care strategy. This will mean working in close co-operation with Emergency and Specialist Physicians and Primary care, to build an efficient and seamless system of care.
- Provide Consultant service on the Acute Medical (Assessment) Unit and in reach to the Emergency Department, Same Day Emergency Care services and direct GP admission services. The post holder would be supported in further developing pathways of care for ambulatory patients.
- We welcome consultants with specialty interest which can be accommodated in the job plan. We already have three consultants with speciality interest (endocrinology, cardiology) along with a nationally and internationally recognized acute medicine consultant researcher.
- On-going Consultant support to short stay patients, general medical patients remaining on the assessment units.
- To participate in teaching and training of junior staff.
- Active involvement in national and international research projects.
- Participate in audit and responsibility for clinical governance.
- Working closely with award wining clinical communication centre (CCC) which liaises with SCAS, GP’s and ED.
- Active SIM suite with an up to date software which is widely used for training purposes.
The successful candidate will work in conjunction with a team of 6 other substantive consultants.

a comprehensive range of acute services as well as being a tertiary referral centre for colorectal, liver, peritoneal carcinomatosis, haemophilia and pseudomyxoma surgery. Services are provided across Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover sites. The Trust covers a population of 600,000 incorporating Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospitals (BNHH), Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH) in Winchester, Andover War Memorial Hospital (AWMH) and community hospitals. We provide one hospital service across multiple localities, delivering services as close as possible to the patient. BNHH and RHCH are 23 miles apart, situated in the middle of
the M3 corridor, with excellent transport links to London and the south coast
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This post has been devised to provide consistent Consultant presences on the Acute Medical Units ensuring national quality indicators for acute medicine are met. Consultant Acute Physicians will provide leadership on
the Acute Medical Unit and in ED from Monday to Friday, supporting acute teams in the assessment, initial treatment and care planning for acutely ill patients referred from ED or local General Practitioners.
They will be responsible for the day to day clinical management of the unit and develop strong links with the ED, radiology, pathology and other clinical specialty teams to create efficient care pathways to improve the
patient care. Leadership of the multidisciplinary team is required to promote early discharge. The daily rapid access admission avoidance ambulatory outpatient service is also to be supported by the appointee with the existing Consultant Acute Physicians.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of completion of CCT at time of interview
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree
- NHS experience
- CCT in Acute Medicine (Consideration will also be given to applicants with Specialty Training in General (Internal) Medicine who have demonstrated a firm commitment to a career in Acute Medicine
Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- Recent clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCST in General (internal) Medicine or Acute Medicine
Desirable criteria
- Expertise in initiatives for reducing admission
- Guideline and pathway development
Clinical Skills & Ability
Essential criteria
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- Proven ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and display leadership
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
Research & Teaching skills
Essential criteria
- Awareness of current acute medical initiatives and developments
- Recent relevant clinical teaching experience within medical and allied disciplines
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Desirable criteria
- Publications in relevant peer reviewed journals
- Participation in research
- Formal training in clinical supervision of junior doctors,Formal training in Educational supervision of junior doctors
- Experience in organising educational activities
