Job overview

To assist and support the delivery of Minor Operations and Dermatology clinics within the Skin Health service under direction of the Skin Health doctors, and run clinics independently to deliver protocolised treatment under the direction of the Skin Health Service co-ordinator

Main duties of the job

o   To communicate effectively with clinicians, the service coordinator, HCAs, the service lead and the administrative team in the Adult referral hub

o   To undertake preparation for Minor Operations, setting up clinics and equipment in treatment consulting rooms

o   To attend Minor Operations and assist in the preparation of patients for investigations and procedures as directed by clinicians

o   To assist in the collection of specimens from lesions and biopsies, labelling and delivering specimens

o   To apply simple post-operative dressings and pressure dressings

o   To provide non-clinical advice, information and guidance to patients in relation to interventions and treatments.

o   To order stock for Dermatology and Minor Operation clinics and undertake stock control

o   To comment on Standard Operational Procedures relevant to the role and propose changes to working practices for own working area.

o   To work under the direction of the service coordinator

o   To be able to concentrate at the computer for long periods, with interruptions during tasks in which accuracy is of high importance.

o   To be able to work under pressure.

o   To be able to prioritise workload effectively.

o   To be able to deal with urgent/unpredictable issues appropriately.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

       Main Duties as above, including:

        To download histology results, arrange urgent results appointments and flag MDT alerts to the lead clinician when patients with cancer (etc) need to be passed to E&NHT

          Occasional exposure to calls from patients who may be depressed, emotional, anxious, angry and stressed.     

o      May be exposed to upsetting information and circumstances.

o      To be aware of issues of safeguarding and ensure that appropriate advice is sought, knowing how to escalate concerns when required.

o      To be present in the role of formal chaperone when patients are undergoing intimate examinations.

o     Will be exposed to bodily fluids and ensure they are disposed of within Trust Policy.

o     Will be required to carry clinical and other equipment, using light to moderate effort when necessary.

Qualifications & Skills

Essential criteria
  • NVQ3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent
  • To be able to work on own initiative
  • To be adept at problem-solving
  • To be able to prioritise tasks and respond appropriately to changing requirements.
  • To be computer and IT literate
  • To be empathetic towards distressed and anxious patients
  • Staff are required to hold a full, valid, UK driving licence and have access to a car to use with business insurance (unless the member of staff has a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).
Desirable criteria
  • To be able to function well within a team comprised of a range of staff (clinicians, admin, receptionists, HCAs, leads and coordinators
  • To have knowledge of SystmOne
