Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine

Consultant

Job overview

This is a new post for a Consultant Physician with specialist interest in Stroke Medicine. We are looking for a colleague to join our team of Consultant Physicians in the provision of general medical and stroke medicine services.

The post holder will provide outpatient and inpatient Stroke Medicine services along with infrequent inpatient General Medicine services but including a regular 1 in 11 commitment to the acute medical on-call rota.

This is a full-time position but candidates wishing to work part-time or in a job-share are encouraged to apply. If a part-time or job-share person is appointed modification of the job plan will be discussed with the appointee on a personal basis.

Main duties of the job

The role will require the provision of a comprehensive Acute Stroke and Stroke Rehabilitation Service with Consultant Colleagues.

The successful appointee will also have  responsibility for diagnosis and treatment of illness for several general medical inpatients.

About Our Department:

St. Mary’s Hospital offers a 24 bedded mixed Hyper Acute, Acute and Rehabilitation Unit which is near the Emergency and Radiology Departments. We use Rapid AI and we are pleased to offer our patients CT perfusion imaging that can be performed rapidly at the time of initial imaging and improves diagnostic confidence and accuracy in the patient with hyperacute stroke; an excellent tool for neuro-interventionists. The rapidity by which CT perfusion may be obtained, coupled with its potential for predicting infarct core and penumbra can help to identify potentially salvageable areas of brain up to 24 hours from stroke and lead to successful mechanical reperfusion with good outcome.

Our service would not operate without our dedicated team of clinicians including a Nurse Consultant, Specialist Nurses, and Therapists on site.  Consultants from the Queen Alexandra Hospital rotate to St. Mary’s on a weekly basis to support the service.

At St. Mary’s we offer Hyper Acute Stroke care, a 24/7 Stroke thrombolysis service (out of hours covered remotely by QAH), a 5-day TIA outpatient service, Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team, and Stroke rehabilitation.

Working for our organisation

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is the only integrated acute, community, mental health and ambulance health care provider in England. We serve a population of approximately 150,000 residents, making the services we offer variable and personalised with a flexible approach to our service users.

Working for our Trust brings a variety of benefits, including an onsite day nursery, cycle-to-work scheme, discounts at local businesses and gyms, and the opportunity to hire Trusts beach hut in Ryde. We offer flexible working opportunities, speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement for you and if it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

The Isle of Wight is a unique and stunning gem located off the South Coast of England, a short ferry journey from Portsmouth and Southampton, with journey times taking from as little as 10 minutes. London can be reached in 90 minutes by rail from Southampton or Portsmouth. The island offers an amazing coastline with beautiful countryside, year-round events, festivals and award-winning attractions.

Our 2020-2025 strategy sets out to ensure that we continue to be a provider of excellent and compassionate care. As part of this strategy, we are proactively taking steps to ensure that we recruit and retain the highest quality of talent to provide CARE and we would welcome applications from under-represented groups to ensure our Trust is an inclusive and diverse employer.
