Under supervision the post holder is responsible for carrying out assigned tasks as part of the non clinical team in support of registered practitioners, and to undertake some aspects of care provision under supervision. Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of service users, always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights, through the adoption of persons centred care principles within the perioperative environment of Sunderland Day Case theatres and Main Theatres.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Non Clinical Duties
To assist the qualified staff in providing perioperative care to patients by undertaking a range of support duties, working within the team of theatre porters providing essential assistance to the department.
Provides support and assistance to the theatre teams by undertaking these essential duties:
· Transferring patients to and from the department (pre and post surgery on trollies and patient beds)
· Ensuring the histological specimens are transported safely in accordance to trust procedures to the pathology labatory
· Safe transfer of blood specimens and arterial blood gases
· Maintenance of the theatre scrubex machine, to ensure that the department have stock of theatre scrubs
· Flexibilty in undertaking duties in both Sunderland Daycase Theatres and Main Theatres
· Safe transportation of surgical instruments to and from the IHSS collection point
· Ensure all clean surgical instruments are placed in correct store rooms within the department
· Undertake time critical tasks to meet the demand of the department
· Ensure that all equipment, beds, trollies are transported across the department and across the trust in accordance to manual handling guidelines
· Lone working will be undertaken in this role- therefore all staff must meet physical ability requirements
Provide reassurance and support to patients, carers and family
Maintains patient privacy, dignity and respect to patients at all times
Demonstrates compassion by recognising and responding to individual needs in a warm, thoughtful, sensitive and helpful way
To respond to patient requests for information to improve communication
Establish and maintain communication with people on routine and operational matters
To act always in a manner which promotes positive working relationships and maintains the professional image of the Trust
To be a procative member of the team, engaging with the staff in the department and ensuring communication remains open and honest

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Evidence of a General Education e.g. GCSE’s or equivalent in Maths and English
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Understanding the requirements of Patient Confidentiality
- Knowledge of Manual Handling of patients, using lifting aids
- Understanding of perioperative environment and professional accountability
Experience
Essential criteria
- Some experience of working in a health care setting
- Customer Care Experience
- Commitment to working in partnership with patients/care
Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to follow clear instructions and feedback to senior staff
- Ability to project a professional manner and approach
- Good hygiene skills (e.g. hand washing etc)
- To be competent in moving and handling as the role is physically demanding and requires the movement of various size of equipment, and varying differing weight of equipment – therefore a level of physical fitness is required
