Are you interested in pursuing a specializing career in Stroke and developing advanced skills which will be used to provide care to Stroke patients in their hyper-acute phase?

We have an exciting opportunity for a registered nurse that would give them the opportunity to develop their stroke skills. 

We are looking for Senior Nurses with Acute Stroke experience to further develop skills in assessing any suspected Stroke patients in A/E and managing patients in the acute phase.

 

Main duties of the job

We have recently developed a Stroke Assessment bay, based on the Acute Stroke unit, for the purpose of rapid Stroke / TIA assessment and delivery of thrombolysis 24 hours a day.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing our Stroke unit and driving standards of care.

Previous experience in Acute Stroke care with the skills to assess and deliver thrombolysis and provide care /expertise post thrombolysis is essential when applying for this position.

You will be supported through Stroke Specific competencies and training to
further develop, and be given support to develop management skills.

MTW is proud to have been chosen in the future to develop a Hyper Acute Stroke Unit at our Maidstone Site, and there will be long term opportunities for career development.

You will need to have a broad range of nursing knowledge and skills, be able to demonstrate that you can provide excellent stroke care; and have up to date NIHSS competency. You will be expected to act as a role model to junior staff and support them in developing their skills in Stroke nursing care.

You should possess excellent interpersonal skills, a passion for caring for patients following a stroke and need to be motivated to continue your professional development within this supportive team.

The Trust provides a full range of general hospital services and some areas of specialist complex care to around 760,000 people living in the south part of West Kent and the north part of East Sussex.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Once your pre-employment checks have been completed you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date which will be in line with one of our Corporate Inductions.

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics.  The programme is full-time (please email [email protected] if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service Check at Enhanced Level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children)

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice at the level of a Stroke Assessor.
  • NIHSS and Stroke Competency are in date.
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how to apply it to self.
  • Able to cannulate and take bloods
  • Understanding of NMC Code of Practice and requirements of it for own practice and behaviour.
Desirable criteria
  • Recent experience in an acute stroke care setting.

  • Demonstrates effective nursing practice in all basic registered nurse procedures.
  • Able to prioritise own workload and that of others as appropriate.
