Job overview
The Hepatology Surveillance Nurse will collaborate closely with the multi-disciplinary team to establish and implement a nurse-led liver surveillance pathway. This pathway will support patients with stable, compensated liver cirrhosis who are at risk of developing Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the outpatient setting
Main duties of the job
The primary purpose of the role is to deliver the HCC surveillance pathway. Key responsibilities include conducting patient assessments, investigations, reviewing blood results, and Ultrasound scans (USS), and providing lifestyle advice and signposting. The aim of the pathway is early detection of HCC and effective management of liver disease to enhance patient outcomes and provide potentially life-saving interventions.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- RGN Professional Body NMC level 1
- Educated to Postgraduate Diploma level or equivalent level of experience.
- Degree in Nursing/Health related subject, undertaking a degree pathway, or willingness to undertake.
- Hepatology/or specialty related qualification or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of Liver disease management including relevant diagnostic investigations.
- Must understand the background to and aims of current healthcare policy/national guidance/CQC/ and appreciate the implications of this on engagement for this project.
- Understanding of the importance of informed consent.
- Clinical Governance and risk management.
Desirable criteria
- Working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- NHS cancer targets and working across multiple sites.
- Management of Liver Disorders Course Advanced Communication Skills training.
- Experience of breaking bad news, or delivering complex, life-altering information.
- Working in nurse led clinics, including performing interventions.

- Communication skills in a variety of settings with patients, relatives, health professionals and senior colleagues and ability to dealing with – conflicting/ controversial/sensitive situations.
- Ability to overcome or manage any barriers to communication.

- Ability to deal with complex and emotional situations, make decisions under pressure, innovative problem solving and awareness of own limitations.
