We are seeking to appoint a full-time consultant to join the existing team of 3 Consultants as part of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Department, in the Medicine Directorate at Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The clinical duties will be primarily based at Tameside Hospital with a few clinics at Ashton Primary Care Centre.

The post holder will have opportunities to develop other interests within Diabetes and Endocrinology. We would welcome someone to develop a sub-specialist interest in Diabetes. We have strong links with the Paediatrics and Obstetrics departments within the hospital to develop further specialist services in Diabetes.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will participate in the day to day running of the diabetes and endocrinology service and will also have every opportunity to participate in the management of the service. They will undertake outpatient clinical activity and contribute to the development of specialist services to achieve consistent, high-quality care within the department.

This will be 10PA per week post although other options will be considered. The position is a permanent appointment with an on-call commitment of 1:14. On-call commitments may be open to negotiation upon interview.

The successful candidate will join a team of highly dedicated medical, nursing, podiatry, and other professionals to help grow, develop, and innovate the service to meet modern standards of care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Provide direct input to patients; contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and lead the co-ordination of care for patients within the Trust.

  • Adopt an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Services.

  • Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standard of care.

  • Ensure there is a robust process for reviewing the quality of services provided and ensure the highest standards are maintained.

  • Act as a clinical supervisor for trainees and participate in the Postgraduate and Undergraduate teaching programmes within the department.

  • Provide a role model of professional leadership, ensuring these are understood and demonstrated by the medical workforce.

  • Offer educational, clinical support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Skills/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent Substantive posts - Must be entered on the Specialist Register (or entry within 6 months)
  • On specialist register for Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Medicine
  • Wide range of experience including significant work in area of specialisation.
  • Evidence of interest in personal development e.g. through research and/or publications
  • Works well within a multidisciplinary environment.
Desirable criteria
  • Obtained CCST /CCT through formal training programme.
  • Higher Medical Degree (MD or MSc)
  • Significant record of publications on relevant topics.
