Job overview

This role combines gaining ‘on the job’ experience whilst undertaking the Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship Programme with the University of Lancashire. The apprenticeship won’t start until September, the post holder will be required to work as a Physiotherapy Assistant for the interim period.

.  The honours degree programme extends over 3 academic years and involves face to face academic learning whilst working as a Physiotherapy assistant. Following completion of the apprenticeship, candidates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and become qualified Physiotherapists.

Please note the entry requirements for this particular apprenticeship are- 

Five GCSEs at grade 5 or above including English Language, Maths and one Science

UCAS 128 points at A2 (ABB) including one Science, Biology/Human Biology is preferred however Psychology, Sociology and PE are acceptable or BTEC National Diploma DDM in a relevant subject

Due to the current Government eligibility criteria for Government funded Apprenticeship schemes, we are currently only able to accept applications from candidates who have been resident in the UK for the for the last 3 years.  We are unable to accept anybody who is currently on a funded programme. 

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will continuously develop their skills and ability as they progress through the degree programme so that on completion they can manage and be responsible for a caseload, with supervision from a Senior Therapist/Team Lead, providing effective Therapy to people with relevant needs.

 

The post holder will contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of therapy programmes as part of the team. The post holder will have the knowledge to interpret information and be skilled in taking appropriate action(s) to achieve the planned outcomes.

 

The post holder will be expected to practice in accordance with the Trust policies, guidelines, standards and statutory requirements, contribute to the maintenance of a safe clinical environment and operate within defined competency boundaries

 

It is expected that the level of responsibility under each of the following duties will increase throughout the employee’s time on the degree programme.

 

The post holder will be provided with a robust induction and ongoing support and training  throughout the role both via the physiotherapy service as well as the wider multidisciplinary team.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate professionalism, enthusiasm for patient care and evidence of previous acute healthcare experience. 

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential as well as experience of working within a team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

 

Provide timely and efficient Physiotherapy interventions to patients according to clinical protocols and service priorities.

Ensure patients receive a high standard of clinical care and that you meet the standards expected from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

Use investigative and analytical skills to undertake a comprehensive Physiotherapy assessment of a patient.

Reflect on complex facts gathered or situations presented and use analysis and judgment skills to consider options for interventions, and outcomes.

Formulate individual management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning and a wide range of treatment skills.

Implement Physiotherapy interventions in partnership with the service user, with the carer as necessary and in consultation with colleagues.

Plan and organise to carry out assessment and interventions in the most appropriate setting.

Monitor and evaluate the outcome of interventions in partnership with the service user if possible, with the carer if necessary and in consultation with colleagues.

Collaborate with the MDT to develop and improve patient pathways.

Respond to unforeseen situations that take precedence over planned work.

Provide advice, teaching and instruction for relatives, carers, and other health professionals to promote understanding of the aims of Physiotherapy and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.

Provide advice to therapy colleagues working within other clinical areas across the Trust.

Support the development of assistants and students.

Use highly developed communication skills to establish good working relationships with colleagues, service users and carers.

Use verbal and non-verbal communication skills and sensitivity with patients, relatives and carers to overcome barriers to communication e.g. loss of hearing, altered perception, expressive and receptive dysphasia, pain, anxiety, problems with cognition

Deal effectively with complex, sensitive or contentious communications with support of a senior therapist

To be an active member in the evaluation of clinical services including the development, implementation and monitoring of clinical standards and outcome measures.

To reflect on service delivery issues and notify managers / area leads where appropriate.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Car driver/ owner
  • Three GCSE passes at grade C/grade 4 or above including maths, English and science or Equivalent.
  • HEI (Higher Education Institute) entry requirements for Pre Reg Physiotherapy Apprenticeship jobs
Desirable criteria
  • Working towards or completed NVQ Level III or Health & Social Care qualification or previous degree
  • ECDL or formal qualifications in word processing and spreadsheets

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous or current employment in health/social care /vocational/rehabilitation setting

  • Team working, Experience of working Weekends
