Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to embark on a neonatal fellowship within University Hospitals of Leicester NHS trust. UHL is host to CenTre Neonatal Transport Service as well the Leicester Neonatal Service. This programme  1 year in duration depending on individual requirements. The service has recently relocated to central location at Castle Donington and now works along side the paediatric and adult transport services as well as St John ambulance service. 

CenTre has been operational since April 2010, regularly undertaking 110 – 140 transfers each month making our service one of the busiest in the UK. The service provides standalone transport for 14 units predominantly in the East Midlands. However, the service does extend into the West Midlands to provide transport services for 3 units around the Coventry / Nuneaton and Warwick area.

You will part of the day to day ruining of the transport service with support from Transport Consultants, working along side a very experienced neonatal nursing team .

You will be give training and support in this role and have many opportunities to extend your transport skills 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

Main duties:

  • Take part the provision of a 24/7, stand alone, high quality and sustainable neonatal transport service.
  • Develop skills and expertise in all aspects of neonatal transport medicine. 
  • Clinical management of the sick newborn in retrieval (including stabilisation and transfer
  • Triage, of babies ensuring effective communication and prioritisation;
  • Ensure safe transfer of babies and families
  • Working collaboratively with clinicians across the network
  • Taking part in service meetings, including weekly huddles, patient reviews M&M's etc
  • Communicating effectively with parents and families the in relation to the care and transfer of their baby.  
  • Participate in clinical audit and research

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder would be expected to develop skills and expertise in all aspects of neonatal transport medicine. Specifically, these would include: Clinical management of the sick newborn in retrieval (including stabilisation and transfer); Skills in triage, communication and prioritisation; The importance of safety in transport; Governance and legal aspects of transport medicine; Organisational issues; Audit and development of clinical guidelines.

Neonatal Transport offers a wide variety of potential training opportunities and the supports development of many skills.  Training will be provided in neonatal transport and with all equipment used by the service.

Mentorship and supervision will be provided and fellows will be expected to maintain a reflective portfolio.

Rota

There is a full shift rota with 10 WTE shared with senior trainees and ANNPs.  The service provides 2 acute team in the day time and 1 acute team at night.  The rota consists of a mixture of long-days (12 hour shifts) and nights where the primary responsibility is to deliver newborn transport.  There are day time 8 hour shifts for gaining additional neonatal experience.  The rota is compliant with the junior doctor contract.

There may be opportunities to provide taster days within some of the other paediatric specialities within University Hospital Leicester such as ECMO or cardiac intensive care when rostered on a day time 8 hour shift.  There is an active educational programme.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB/MBBS,
  • Excellent English Communication Skills (if overseas IELTS needed for GMC registration)
  • Eligible for UK GMC registration

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 1 year UK, with 6 months experience of tertiary neonatal at middle grade
  • Confident in newborn resuscitation. NLS provider or equivalent e.g. NRP
Desirable criteria
  • Previous neonatal transport medicine experience
  • Completed or due to complete postgraduate training

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Skills and knowledge to manage difficult acute neonatal emergencies.
  • Be technically competent to act as a middle grade doctor in neonatology
  • Good advanced neonatal practical skills including demonstrable of intubation and in date neonatal life support
  • competence at emergency intubation.

Audit & Research

Essential criteria
  • Understand the principles of, and have participated in Audit
  • Understand the principles of clinical governance
  • Understand the place of research but experience not essential
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of participation in audit.

Communication & Realtionship skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent standard of spoken and written English
  • Highly developed communication and listening skills.
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities
  • Able to deal with conflict

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Computer literate including ability to use Microsoft Office applications independently

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills
  • Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Able to manage junior doctors and communicate effectively with senior doctors and Consultants
