Structural Cardiology Fellow (ST3+)

NHS Medical & Dental: Local Appointment nodal point 4 (MT04)

AI tools like chatbots and virtual assistants can support you as you complete your application. For example, they can check for spelling or grammar errors, or help you to decide what to include.

But they shouldn’t replace your own responses or be used to write the application for you.

Relying too much on AI can negatively impact your chances of success, because automatically generated answers:

  • might not be specific or relevant enough to address the criteria in the recruitment profile
  • often seem generic and not personalised enough – an AI response won’t show your unique voice and perspective
  • could misrepresent information about you, such as your qualifications, skills and experience

We monitor applications for any behaviour that could create an unfair advantage, and we check all references carefully. You are likely to be tested on your experience at interview, so be honest and make sure all the information in your application is correct.

As the Structural Fellow you will join a strong and well-resourced team of structural operators (Dr Banning, Dr Hussain, Prof Kovac and Dr Rajendra), supported by an experienced team of nurses including our pioneering Structural Nurse Specialist. We deliver a comprehensive structural programme of >600 structural procedures per year maintaining our position among the highest performing centres in the country reflecting the composition, hard work, adaptability, and commitment of the entire multidisciplinary team (interventional and imaging  cardiology, cardiac anaesthesia, stroke medicine, paediatric-congenital cardiology, cardiac and vascular surgery).

The purpose of this post is to offer comprehensive training in structural cardiac interventions with primary emphasis on TAVI but also in all other interventions (mitral-clip, replacement and mitral valvuloplasty, as well as stroke prevention therapies (LAA closure, paravalvular leaks, septal defects) as well as to be part of the Structural Heart Team (MDT, patient data and anatomy analysis, procedural planning and structural clinics).

The appointee will be strongly encouraged to take part in focused structural research for which there are ample opportunities. Previous fellows have participated in research activity which has led to peer-reviewed publications.

12 month fixed term contract.

There are 4 cardiac theatres, 5 catheter laboratories (3 intervention, 1 pacing and 1 EP), state of the art non-invasive imaging facilities including cardiac CT, MRI and state of the art echocardiography. The unit provides high volume comprehensive services in coronary and structural intervention, cardiac imaging, pacing, electrophysiology, heart failure, acute general cardiology. and is a very strong research portfolio.

The applicant will be expected to attend regular weekly Wednesday lunchtime and monthly Heart-Brain and monthly mitral MDT meetings where the management of patients with structural disease are discussed. Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

We have an NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and are widely recognised for our world-leading and international excellent research.  The high calibre of our academic endeavour was recognised in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) which ranked the University of Leicester 2nd for Clinical Medicine (UoA1), with 95% of our submission ranked world-leading (4-star) or internationally excellent (3-star).
