Job overview
The post holder will support the Moving and Handling advisor to provide a Moving and Handling service to all staff in the organization according to Trust policies, procedures, guidelines and legislation.
The post holder will deliver, monitor, and evaluate moving and handling training sessions, giving expert advice and guidance to staff on the moving and handling of people and objects in order to improve patient care and reduce clinical risk.
The post holder will contribute to and independently complete patient specific moving and handling risk assessments, as well as staff specific ergonomic workplace and workstation risk assessments.
The post-holder will support the development of the moving and handling service by completing audits of manual handling equipment and of staff practices with the aim to reduce manual handling incidents and injuries and contribute to improved staff and patient safety.
The post holder will be given support from the Whittington Health Moving and Handling Advisor to develop within the role; however the post holder will be expected to work with level of individual and professional autonomy.
Finally, the post holder must be able to proactively develop their skills within the field of moving and handling through continued professional development opportunities.
Main duties of the job
Deliver mandatory M&H Training sessions on safe patient handling, at induction and refresher level, to clinical staff across all areas of Whittington Health in line with the training needs analysis.
Assess staff M&H competencies during training sessions and identify M&H risks within the workplace, use skills in risk assessment, clinical reasoning and problem-solving to apply safer handling principles, recommend equipment, techniques or other solutions appropriate to that setting and to differentiate/adapt training accordingly.
Complete staff specific ergonomic workplace M&H risk assessments and ergonomic workstation (Display Screen Equipment) risk assessments, as and when required.
Complete patient specific M&H risk assessments and provide advice within the clinical environment about the appropriate equipment and/or handling technique, as and when required.

Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- A healthcare qualification or other relevant clinical courses/transferable skills in area of practice
- Competency based training (Trusted assessor’s training; Rehab technician training; Wheelchair assessor’s training)
Desirable criteria
- Registered AHP (OT/PT or other) with current registration with regulatory body
- Moving and Handling Train the Trainer qualification for materials and patient handling (or willingness to undertake).
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to work under own initiative and effectively in a team
- Ability to motivate others to bring about change where agreement and cooperation is required.
- Computer literate and competent in use of basic IT packages i.e. Microsoft Word and Excel.

Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Interest in/ experience with moving and handling assessment and planning (i.e. transfers, mobility, seating or workplace ergonomics
- Experience of working with patients with various diagnoses and abilities, in a group or individual basis, including plus-sized patients.
- Experience of working in a therapy department and/or multi-disciplinary team in the community or hospital setting.
- Experience of explaining equipment to others, sharing information with colleagues, carers, patients.
