Job overview
As a Phlebotomist, you will play a vital role in patient care by collecting blood samples safely and efficiently from patients across hospital wards, outpatient clinics, and community locations throughout South Essex.
This is a full-time, permanent position (37.5 hours per week) based at Pathology First – Basildon & Southend Hospitals.
Your work will directly support accurate and timely laboratory results, which are essential for clinical diagnosis and treatment. You will join a supportive and professional team while developing your skills through a structured Phlebotomy Academy programme.
Main duties of the job
- Deliver safe and professional blood sample collection in line with infection control and identification protocols
- Work across hospital wards, outpatient clinics, and community settings
- Provide reassurance and high-quality care to patients, maintaining dignity and professionalism
- Accurately label, handle, and dispatch specimens according to procedures
- Maintain accurate patient records and documentation (manual and electronic)
- Use appropriate PPE and adhere to health and safety standards
- Participate in weekend and bank holiday rotas as part of a flexible shift pattern
- Complete mandatory training including First Aid, manual handling, and phlebotomy updates
- Support service improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To provide a high-quality phlebotomy service by collecting blood samples safely and efficiently, ensuring patient comfort, and supporting accurate diagnostic testing.
- Perform venepuncture safely and confidently following training
- Ensure all samples are correctly identified, labelled, and transported
- Maintain strict infection prevention and control standards
- Communicate effectively with patients and colleagues
- Work flexibly across multiple sites as required
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with data protection standards
- Accurately input and manage patient information using IT systems
- Support team working and contribute to a positive working environment
Person specification
Essential
Essential criteria
- A good general education (GCSEs or equivalent
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a caring approach.
- Willingness to complete formal phlebotomy and First Aid training.
- Ability to follow procedures accurately and maintain attention to detail
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (for multi-site work).
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.
Desirable criteria
- Substantial experience in a healthcare setting
