Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Supplies Assistant to join our team and support laboratory services across Essex, including Basildon Hospital, Southend Hospital, and the Pathology First HUB.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring laboratories are fully stocked and operating efficiently. Responsibilities include ordering supplies, processing deliveries, organising and replenishing stock, carrying out inventory checks, and maintaining accurate records. The role also involves supporting waste management and sterilisation processes while adhering to laboratory procedures and safety standards.

Main duties of the job

  • To collect from hospital stores, and accept from couriers, deliveries of laboratory  supplies. Unpack, and distribute to the appropriate laboratories and storage areas.
  • To receipt stock into the computer using the inventory management software, print labels and label items to enable tracking.
  • To assist in recording stock consumption by scanning items into the inventory management system.
  • Monitor stock levels and place orders for supplies accurately and in good time using the inventory management system.
  • To escalate any issues to the supervisor or manager to investigate and resolve problems  with orders and supplies.
  • To replenish stocks from main laboratory stores to several locations, including  departments, wards, cupboards, fridges and phlebotomy trolleys, and to receive orders, pick pack and dispatch goods to community locations.
  • To maintain levels of blood culture packs, ensuring there are adequate packs made up to meet demand.
  • To ensure laundry (dirty laboratory overalls) is prepared for collection; unpack and distribute clean laundry.
  • To collect and segregate bagged laboratory waste into the appropriate bins.
  • Responsible for cleaning and/or housekeeping tasks as needed, including removing clinical and other waste.
  • Will be expected to complete any other tasks commensurate with the job role.
  • Working schedules per rota Monday – Friday, we require flexibility, but standard shifts are 8am-4pm.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Based off-site in Basildon, Essex, our purpose-built, state-of-the-art hub laboratory undertakes consolidated, harmonised, routine testing as well as an increasing range of specialist laboratory work. This leaves the hospital-based ‘Essential Service Laboratories’ – also run by SYNLAB – to focus on urgent clinical laboratory tests, which require a fast turnaround time
Over 450 employees service a population of over 850’000 people locally, providing over 16 million tests annually.

The salary for this part-time position will be paid on a pro rata basis to reflect the contracted hours.

  • Any equivalent experience or qualifications

Experience

  • Able to use phone, email and other common office tools
  • Managing stocks and orders
  • Working knowledge of supplies procedures and systems

  • Warehouse experience or any previous supplies role

  • Working in a fast-paced organisation and being able to multitask
  • Able to communicate effectively with colleagues and others
  • Recognize the need for confidentiality and maintain patient confidentiality, respect and dignity

  • Experience within another supplies/warehouse department
