Senior Specialist Audiologist

Band 6

To assist in the day to day running of the Acute Audiology Service. To be responsible for assessing, reviewing and assimilating audiological, relevant medical and other information when formulating optimal patient diagnostic and management plans, taking into account current evidence based practice and latest research findings.To undertake simple and more complex test procedures in all cases, with or without supervision, as appropriate.

The Band 6 posts will have the responsibility for various aspects of the more specialist work, including providing a joint care programme for patients with more complex needs and/or tinnitus, to deliver deaf awareness / communication training and to be responsible for those patients who are transferring from the Children’s to the Adult Hearing Services. These responsibilities will be shared between the Band 6 posts.

To liaise closely with other specialist clinical technical, therapy, medical and nursing staff as required to ensure the best possible standard of patient care. To make appropriate onward referrals and to order other investigative tests when required, e.g. MRIs. The service is based at Croydon University Hospital and at outreach clinics at Purley Memorial Hospital.

Working for our organisation

This post was created following a revision of the ENT / Audiology pathway that was  introduced in autumn 2018. Audiology are leading on the service for adults, 18 years and older, with hearing, balance and/or tinnitus disorders who have traditionally been seen in the ENT service. We will also be directly ordering requests for imaging.  This is an exciting development for the Audiology Team.

The Audiology Department is a busy and energetic one, with an Adult Audiolgy Lead, 8 Audiologists and 2 Assistant Audiologists as well as a Hearing and Balance Therapist. We are extremely fortunate to have an experienced administration team to support our services. The team works well together across the disciplines provided and all are always willing to help each other out. Everybody comments on the warm and friendly atmosphere in the Department.

We provide an adult audiology service to the people of Croydon, including diagnostic support to some of the ENT clinics, including audiovestibular investigations, hearing aid provision and rehabilitation service. In addition we provide an electrophysiology service.

Croydon is located in South London is under-going extensive re-development. There are excellent transport links with London and the South-East via train, tram or bus. Staff car parking is also available.

The post will be based at the Croydon University Hospital and at our outreach clinic in Purley Memorial Hospital.

Education And Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • B.Sc. in Audiology or BTEC (NC) in Medical Physics & Physiological Measurement (MPPM) BAAT parts I & II Or the equivalent of these qualifications. Evidence of continuing personal development
Desirable criteria
  • M.Sc. in Audiology

Knowledge And Understanding

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of general audiology Knowledge and experience of adult patients with Tinnitus and the more complex hearing needs. Knowledge and experience of adults with vestibular conditions. Recent knowledge or training in electrophysiology. Previous experience of staff training and development Awareness of Child Safety/Protection Issues, Vulnerable Adult Safeguarding, Data Protection Issues and Health and Safety Issues
Desirable criteria
  • Attended courses in newer techniques

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a busy Audiology Department for at least 3-4 years. Up to date knowledge of advances and changes in Audiology. Working in a diplomatic and confidential way
Desirable criteria
  • Health and Safety Issues / Safeguarding Issues Routinely fitted patients with dual hearing aid / white noise generators. Direct access clinics for adults aged ≥18 yrs old
