Job overview

Put your electrical skills to work keeping a hospital running.

With annual leave included, you’ll work five months of the year.

A lighting fault on a ward. A planned check on an emergency generator. A breakdown that needs a calm head and a practical solution. As a Shift Electrical Engineer at Croydon Health Services, you’ll tackle varied maintenance work across a working hospital.

You’ll work four days on, four days off, with rotating day and night shifts.

The work offers a change from repetitive house-bashing or construction site jobs. You'll work on everything from generators and emergency lighting to ventilation systems and critical hospital infrastructure like medical gases. You’ll also gain experience with specialist equipment you may not encounter in a standard commercial role.

You don’t need previous NHS experience. You’ll need sound electrical skills, a safe approach to work and the ability to solve problems under pressure.

Main duties of the job

You’ll work in wards, theatres, offices and plant rooms, keeping essential services running safely. Duties include:

  • Responding to breakdowns and carrying out electrical fault-finding.
  • Maintaining lighting, power distribution and emergency lighting.
  • Working on generators and battery backup systems.
  • Completing planned maintenance, inspections and testing.
  • Supporting wider building services, including ventilation, air conditioning and medical gases, within your training and competence.
  • Carrying out minor installations and improvements and completing maintenance records.

You’ll work alongside electrical and mechanical engineers, maintenance assistants and team leaders, with support available when needed.

What you'll need

  • A recognised electrical apprenticeship and relevant trade qualification.
  • An 18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification.
  • Strong fault-finding skills and knowledge of electrical distribution and installation systems.
  • Experience in a service-led maintenance environment.
  • Knowledge of building services and the ability to read engineering drawings.
  • A sound understanding of health and safety.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Hospital experience, specialist training certificates and knowledge of allied trades are useful but not essential.

Working for our organisation

  • Varied work and specialist skills: gain experience across electrical, mechanical and building services in a hospital environment, where safety standards and maintenance procedures are central to the work.
  • Training and development: electrical refresher courses and specialist training in medical gases, ventilation and pressure systems, with opportunities to progress towards senior or supervisory roles.
  • Overtime opportunities: additional earnings through overtime and emergency repair work.
  • Annual leave: starting at 27 days plus eight bank holidays, rising to 29 days after five years’ NHS service and 33 days after ten. Leave is calculated in hours to reflect your shift pattern.
  • NHS Pension Scheme: access to a pension with employer contributions.
  • Staff discounts: eligibility for Blue Light Card membership, offering discounts on shopping, food, travel and days out.
  • Permanent NHS employment: maintaining essential hospital services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust provide hospital and community services from a number of community and specialist clinics throughout Croydon. The Trust was formed on 1st August 2010 through the integration of Croydon Community Health Services and Mayday Healthcare NHS Trust. Around 4,100 staff provide services for a population of over 360,000 people who are relatively young with a high level of ethnic diversity.

Our main hospital site, Croydon University Hospital is one of the busiest in London. We’re also leading the way in providing more healthcare outside hospitals at clinics, specialist centres and in people’s homes. Our experienced district nursing teams, Allied Health Professionals and community matrons look after people of all ages across Croydon and our Children’s Hospital at Home cares for children with long-term conditions without them having to come to hospital.

Across the NHS everyone is working hard to meet growing demand and we’re no exception. But with the right people on board, we are rising to this challenge, putting our people in the driving seat, encouraging innovation and transforming our services to give local people the quality of care they deserve. Croydon Health Services puts a great deal of importance on education and training throughout the careers of all of our staff. As well as offering access to a range of core skills training and professional development.
