12-month post for a full-time Clinical Fellow within the Acute Medicine Department

 

Successful candidates will work alongside General Medicine Physicians working within the acute care team. Within the Acute Care Team Successful Candidates will work a range of roles including the  ‘Deteriorating Patient SHO Role’

 

Working at the Homerton Hospital allows successful candidates to work within one of the most ethnically diverse Boroughs in the UK. This will offer the Clinical Fellows a wide range of experience in the detailed interpretation of microbiology laboratory results, management a range of conditions in both inpatients & ambulatory medicine patients.

 

Successful Candidates will be given dedicated time to develop Skills in Medical Education including dedicated time to attend courses and run training programmes including facilitating in situ Simulation courses. 

 

We invite applications from post‑FY2 doctors aspiring to develop their careers, for a distinguished Clinical Fellow post within a respected London teaching hospital.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will also be given dedicated time to work within the Medical Education team. They will be given formal training (via train the trainer course) to develop your skills as a clinical teacher and facilitator. The postholder will then lead on implementing and developing the in-situ-simulation teaching across the Acute Medicine Department. You will be supported to do so but the Medical Education team and given at least 2 clinical sessions to do so. You will also be given the opportunity to develop a teaching program across the acute care unit.

The post-holder is also encouraged to pursue other, non-clinical, activities. Opportunities include development of procedural competencies, specialty clinics/theatre and critical care experience. Previous post holders have also led large quality improvement projects and clinical informatics improvements. A study budget is available to facilitate external learning opportunities and in house teaching can also be provided. Dedicated teaching is available those sitting clinical examinations (such as PACES) can also be provided. The nature of this work is flexible and will be tailored to the individual’s requirements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The template shift patterns will include twilight medical take/admission shifts, night shifts - taking handover from critical care outreach, with responsibility for covering unwell and deteriorating medical and surgical patients on the wards.

The key responsibilities of the post holder are to provide SHO level care of patients admitted to hospital in an emergency during the first period of their stay, to support the running of the Acute Care Unit with support from the ACU registrar and Consultant and to contribute to the hospital at night team in the role of ‘Deteriorating Patient SHO’.

Education & Higher qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS / MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC registration
  • Permission to work in the UK (i.e. appropriate visa and/or work permit)
  • Evidence of successful completion of Foundation year 1 & 2 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of completion of CMT or equivalent
  • MRCP Part 1
  • MRCEM part A (or equivalent)
  • FRCPath Part 1
  • Other related qualifications: e.g. Diploma in Medical Microbiology, MSc in Microbiology, Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 6 months experience in General or Acute Medicine at FY2 level including participation in unselected take
  • Experience of General Surgical specialities, including participation in unselected take, at FY1 or equivalent level
  • Clinical Knowledge and expertise: appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgements to problems
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice
Desirable criteria
  • 6 months experience at ST (IMT) 1 and above
  • Experience of Microbiology & Infection or clinical specialties where there is a significant component of infection e.g. ITU/HDU
  • Experience of laboratory work (including research) relevant to medical microbiology
  • Experience of Emergency medicine, Acute Medicine or Ambulatory Care.
  • 2 years clinical NHS experience

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Capacity to manage/prioritise time and information effectively
  • Good organisational skills e.g. organise ward rounds
  • Ability to use logical/lateral thinking to solve problems/make decisions, indicating an analytical/scientific approach
  • Competent IT skills including Word & experience of using hospital computer systems (e.g. EPR, PACS, order communication system etc.)
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience using WinPath IT systems
  • Relevant procedural skills
