Job overview

Consultant in Anaesthesia

We are seeking three substantive Consultants in Anaesthetics with a general interest. Successful candidates will join a collaborative and forward-thinking department that delivers a wide range of anaesthetic services across our three main hospital sites.

Theatre lists will be at either Ealing, Central Middlesex or Northwick Park sites. Participation in a 1:12 (weekday and weekend) cross-site (Northwick Park and Ealing sites) on-call rota is required. Current on-call is remunerated at 1PA and attracts a 3% availability supplement.

Main duties of the job

 Direct supervision of emergency operating as required
 Direct supervision of obstetric anaesthesia as required
 Direct operational management of evening emergency lists and weekend emergency lists
 Weekend review of PACU patients as required
 Preoperative Assessment (POA): We are reconfiguring our POA service so that it will become a single sub-specialty under the heading of Peri-Operative Medicine, within the Anaesthetic/Critical Care directorate. It will be desirable for applicants to have training, experience and interest in this field – essential for Job Plan 1. This new service will provide access to standardised high quality perioperative care for patients across all surgical specialties. It will have dedicated nursing teams aligned with specific surgical specialties who have received training and support from physicians, anaesthetists and intensivists to achieve agreed upon competencies using standardised templates. High Risk Anaesthetic Clinics (HiRAC) will be delivered alongside physician colleagues and other members of the multidisciplinary team including physios, pharmacists and dieticians.
 Paediatrics: on call and CEPOD activity at NPH involves a significant Paediatric cohort, frequently requiring acute management and transport to more specialist units via the local Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS). NPH also houses a small Paediatric HDU with capacity to care for a maximum of two patients with established tracheostomies/long-term ventilation.
