Job overview
You’ll be responsible for delivering high-quality painting and decorating services across the Trust’s estate, both internally and externally, ensuring work is completed to recognised trade standards and in compliance with health and safety regulations.
The role involves planning and undertaking decorating works from initial survey through to completion, including measuring, estimating, ordering materials, preparing work areas, carrying out repairs, and reinstating fixtures and fittings. The post holder liaises closely with clinical and non-clinical staff to minimise disruption and ensure customer requirements are met.
Key responsibilities include undertaking planned preventative maintenance (PPM), responding to reactive maintenance requests, carrying out inspections, managing stock levels, supervising contractors, and updating work records using the Trust’s electronic systems and PDA devices.
The post holder is expected to work safely at all times, complying with relevant legislation, including Health and Safety, COSHH, PUWER, Working at Height, and other statutory requirements. Duties may also extend to general building maintenance activities such as flooring, tiling, glazing, roofing repairs, plastering, and scaffold erection.

Main duties of the job
- To provide a comprehensive painting and decorating service for all areas of the Trust.
- Carry out necessary painting maintenance tasks to ensure the up-keep and to improve the overall look of the Trust, Trust properties, and all properties covered by any current.
- Carry out planned and reactive maintenance according to requirements and needs of the Department.
- To undertake other duties within the job description as requested / directed by your supervisor, maintenance team manager and estates manager.
- All Painting and Decorating works to all hospital property, internally and externally, to a high quality and acceptable craft standards and approved methods of working.
- Undertake complete work including measure design manufacture requisitioning of materials and installation
- Estimate cost and order paint and materials for minor works schemes ensuring compliance with all necessary standards.
- Liaise with other members of staff and patients on a daily basis to ensure work is specified correctly and undertaken in accordance with the user requirements with the minimum of disruption all staff Wards and departments.
- Prepare working area in an efficient and organised manner. Removal of all furniture, fittings and fixtures, and re-fixing on completion.
- To work in potentially hazardous areas, confined spaces, take all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and damage in accordance with the Trust and department Health and Safety policies procedures and safe working practices.
