Job overview

This post is a substantive consultant post in anaesthesia based at The Royal London Hospital.  The vacancy has arisen due to a retirement.  The post holder will be an employee of Bart’s Health and there may be future opportunities or requirements to work at any of the other hospitals in the Barts Health group.

This is a general post for a consultant anaesthetist, with an interest in neuroanaesthesia and regional anaesthesia. The appointee must be able to work flexibly and be able to cover the range of specialties provided for in the Adult Anaesthesia service at The Royal London Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Applicants should possess full GMC registration, and either be on the Specialist Register or if in training, be within 6 months of receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview.

Qualifications/ Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • SIA (or equivalent advanced training of at least 6 months) in neuroanaesthesia
  • Full GMC Registration with a ‘Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or MBChB or equivalent
  • CCT in anaesthesia (or Equivalent) or, if in training, within 6 months of CCT
  • FRCA (or equivalent)
  • ALS provider
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of specialist societies relevant to the job plan
  • Experience of UK healthcare system
  • SIA Fellowship or equivalent Advanced training in regional anaesthesia
  • Audit experience

Special Knowledge/ Abilities and/or Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical skills to provide anaesthesia for a wide range of neurosurgical procedures, including complex intracranial vascular surgery and complex spinal surgery
  • Experience in the management of major trauma and major haemorrhage
  • Proficient in regional anaesthesia, including blocks for chest wall trauma and ‘awake’ upper limb surgery
  • Experience in neurocritical care of elective and emergency neurosurgical patients
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in independent delivery of anaesthesia for complex orthopaedic and trauma patients
  • Expertise in elective and emergency anaesthesia for neuroradiology, including mechanical thrombectomy
  • Experience in specialist neuroanaesthesia techniques, including for ‘awake’ craniotomy and for intra-operative neurophysiology monitoring
  • Abilty to work flexibly, delivering anaesthesia care to a wide range of patients in the surgical specialities located at the Royal London Hospital

Research

  • Ability to critically appraise published evidence & apply research outcomes to clinical problems

  • Presentation of abstracts and posters at specialist society academic meetings

  • Publication of original research (abstracts or papers)
  • Formal training in research methodology
  • Experience of presentations to learned societies on topics related to anaesthesia
