Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within the Cellular Pathology Department for a full time Advanced Biomedical Scientist specialising in histology.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a vacancy within the Histopathology Laboratory in our busy but friendly department. We are looking for an enthusiastic, hard working BMS who should be state registered and have considerable experience working in a diagnostic histopathology laboratory. 

This post is based at St. George’s Hospital however the post holder may be required to work at any of the SWLP sites as and when necessary.

Main duties of the job

Our refurbished laboratories are spacious, well equipped and embrace lean methodologies. We provide an extensive range of diagnostic techniques including special stains, immunocytochemistry, OSNA, Moh's, molecular testing, frozen sections and enzyme histochemistry. The department also has specialised neuropathology and perinatal pathology sections and is currently implementing a digital pathology solution.

State registered, and with a good knowledge of immunohistochemistry , you’ll have good leadership, team working and organisational skills, as well as the ability to use your initiative. The post holder ideally will have appropriate skills to support our Technical Leads across a number of specialist sections of this division. 

The department is an approved training laboratory and has full accreditation. We encourage personal development and actively support the IBMS CPD scheme by holding regular meetings and encouraging attendance at external meetings. Participation in further studies will be supported.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be proficient in all designated areas of diagnostic work within the department and to provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff.

To undertake a wide range of diagnostic tests and screening procedures through to initial interpretation.

To ensure that test procedures are carried out according to SOPs, assess that other junior staff are competent and participate in their regular review and update.

To undertake technical validation of highly complex results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols.

To measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.

To carry out corrective action when quality control and assurance procedures indicate loss of performance.

Ensure that documentation is maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records).

To identify and report clinical risks so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.

To plan, prioritise and supervise the scientific workloads of a section on a day-to-day basis.

To provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff.

To possess highly developed, advanced specialist scientific skills.

To ensure that the laboratory standard operational and health & safety policies are understood and carried out by all staff.

Responsible for the maintenance, condition, quality control and record keeping of instruments and equipment associated with the section.

Adaptation to new methodology or working practices when required, due to changing circumstances.

To contribute towards a culture of quality in the department and to comply and promote the quality initiatives within the department consistent with the requirements of accrediting and regulatory bodies.

To support all diagnostic procedures provided by the department.

Participation in and facilitation of Quality Assurance and Audit within the section.

To be proactive in the updating and generation of standard operating procedures.

To validate reports as required using judgemental expertise.

To authorise reports when given the delegated responsibility.

To assist in the implementation and development of new and existing techniques.

To provide scientific advice and act as a resource both internally and externally.

To maintain an awareness of current developments especially with regard to special areas of responsibility.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MSc in Biomedical Sciences
  • An honours degree or equivalent in a biological science
  • HCPC Registration
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology / Histology
  • Equivalent experience at masters level
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences
  • Certificate of Expert Practice in Histopathology

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience post HCPC registration in the relevant discipline
  • Excellent working knowledge of all aspects of specialist subject in relevant discipline
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Evidence of ability to problem solve
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation, policies and procedures
  • Evidence of experience of quality management systems, audits and document control
  • Knowledge of quality control and assurance
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of training laboratory staff
  • Experience of clinical governance issues
