Job overview

Applications are invited for a part-time (2 PA) Consultant in Orthodontics. The post is based at the Royal National ENT & Eastman Dental Hospitals, part of the Specialist Hospitals Board of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Successful applicant will join an established team in providing a wide range of orthodontic services, postgraduate training and research. Applicants will be expected to have excellent communication skills and experience in postgraduate teaching and training. 

All candidates must be on the Specialist Register for Orthodontics and hold the CCST. Applicants must also have obtained the ISFE in Orthodontics or be within six months of attainment at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

This position is to support existing clinical service provision and training needs. The focus of the post will be Orthodontic clinical supervision, clinical training and teaching of trainee orthodontists. 

As well as educating trainees with their knowledge and expertise in the field of orthodontics, they will be responsible for treatment being carried out safely, to a level appropriate of a specialist hospital and complying with clinical protocols. 

A key component of the post will be communication with referring practitioners and close working with the consultant team to help drive the service to achieve the objectives of the department.

Person specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Eligible for full registration with the GDC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise- NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the GDC register and Specialist Register in Orthodontics by date of appointment
  • On the UK GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics by the time of appointment- NB: Non UK trained doctors must be on the GDC register and Specialist Register in Orthodontics by date of appointment
  • Membership in Orthodontics, or equivalent
  • Successful completion of an SAC approved 3 year minimum training programme in Orthodontics
  • Successful completion of an SAC-approved 2 year minimum training programme in a Fixed Term Training Appointment (FTTA) in Orthodontics or within 6 months of completion of training, or equivalent, which follows on from the pre-CCST training period of 3 years, or equivalent
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Orthodontics
  • Attained the ISFE in Orthodontics or equivalent before commencing consultant post
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in Orthodontics equivalent to that required of a UK CCST.
  • All aspects of orthodontic care with particular emphasis on the management of complex problems and multidisciplinary care, including orthognathic, hypodontia, ortho-paediatric dentistry interfaces.
  • Experience with a wide range of orthodontic techniques and materials.
  • Experience of innovative treatments.

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Effective and ongoing participation in Audit by demonstration of completed audits.
  • Effective involvement with clinical governance
  • Experience of audit supervision of others and leading audit programmes
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of innovative service developments, care pathways

Management

Essential criteria
  • A 2 year additional training period post CCST in a SAC-approved training programme, to gain knowledge and experience of healthcare delivery in secondary care, or equivalent
  • Understanding of the delivery of healthcare within the NHS
  • Experience of working with and managing teams and liaising with colleagues.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NHS policies and procedures.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of managing, or assisting in the management of, healthcare delivery within the NHS.
  • Evidence of contribution to the management of healthcare delivery at a departmental level.

Research

Essential criteria
  • Ability to appraise scientific literature critically
  • Application of evidence based practice to clinical care
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in refereed Journals
  • Research relevant to Orthodontics
  • MSc/ MClinDent (or equivalent)

Teaching skill & experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of chairside clinical teaching and training of postgraduates and junior staff.
  • Experience of lectures, presentations and formal teaching to a variety of clinical groups
  • Commitment to training and CPD

  • Completion of a teaching or training course
