This role is working for Palliative Consultants, Nurse Consultant  in the Children & Young People's Outreach & Symptom Care Team at Royal Marsden Hospital, Sutton.

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive Medical P.A. service.

He/she will liaise with all colleagues within the multidisciplinary team, and with internal departments and external agencies to ensure the continuity of patient treatment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To act as the first point of contact for users of the service, and to proactively deal with telephone enquiries from patients, their Carers, GP’s, Hospices, Community Teams and colleagues in other hospitals in a professional manner.
  • To type and distribute clinical and general correspondence for both NHS and private    patients in line with Trust standards. 
  • To maintain an up-to-date diary, including the organisation of meetings and seminars as requested by the Consultant(s), as per their preference, and making him/her aware of changes as they occur. 
  • To make travel arrangements on behalf of the Consultant(s) in accordance with Trust policies, and to arrange accommodation for visiting doctors as required. Maintain the  Outreach & Symptom Care Team rota and record Consultant and Outreach Team staff leave electronically. 
  • To pro-actively liaise with the team and clerical supervisors within Outpatients to ensure effective clinic management (for example, scheduling, amending, cancelling, reducing and overbooking clinic lists.) 

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • General education, educated to GCSE level or equivalent
  • Competent at Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
Desirable criteria
  • Association of Medical Secretaries, Practice Managers and Receptionists (AMSPAR) qualified or equivalent.
  • European Computer Driving License (ECDL) or Equivalent

Skills Abilities/knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Audio typing skills (60 wpm min.)
  • Understanding of medical terminology (especially oncology)
  • The ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English to a wide range of people
  • Willingness and demonstrable ability to work as part of a team.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial previous medical secretarial experience
  • Experience of diary management.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of training other secretarial staff
  • Previous experience of managing/ supervising staff

  • Evidence of ability to work without close supervision
