Job overview
We’re looking for compassionate and caring Maternity Support Workers with a passion to be a key part of the patient care journey here at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). Our Maternity Support Workers take great pride in the essential work we do. That’s because we’re not just helping patients, we’re going the extra mile for them – day in, day out. Our midwifery teams are committed to caring for our patients and families, delivering consistent, high quality, patient focused care.
You’ll communicate in a sensitive and compassionate manner with patients, relatives, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team, working flexibly across a range of day and night shifts over 7 days a week.
We have Maternity Support Worker jobs available at all 3 of our main maternity sites. You will be asked for preference in site of work, at your interview. We cover the St Mary's hospitals at North Manchester, Oxford Road Campus and Wythenshawe.
Main duties of the job
Being supervised by Registered Midwives & within Trust guidelines & protocols, you’ll assist the Midwifery team in delivering the excellent standard of patient care that you would expect for yourself and your loved ones.
You will be required to perform blood tests on both mothers and babies.
You will also be expected to support the midwives with administration eg: ordering blood tests, preparing booking packs, preparing homebirth packs.
The role will also include cleaning and maintaining the environment , restocking and ordering equipment, utilising IT systems including the use of HIVE
You will have excellent interpersonal skills as you will be closely communicating with women and their families.

If you are new to working in healthcare, you’ll be supported to develop yourself through our Support Worker Development Programme for Maternity Support Workers. The great news is, the completion of this Programme will give you the opportunity to progress into a Band 3 Maternity Support Worker role.
If you’re an experienced Maternity Support Worker seeking a new opportunity, you’ll undertake a skills analysis to ensure you meet the requirements of the role. If there are gaps in your knowledge, you’ll be supported to access relevant clinical modules to support your progression to a Band 3 post.
Evidence of prior learning will be reviewed & considered.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Be willing to undertake and complete the National Care Certificate within 12 weeks of starting.
- Willing to gain equivalent knowledge and skills by undertaking the Trust Clinical Support Worker Development Programme
Desirable criteria
- Completed National Care Certificate
- Level 2 Vocational qualification e.g NVQ or Apprenticeship in Health Care
- Level 3 Vocational qualification e.g NVQ or Apprenticeship in Health Care
- Holds Functional Skills Level 1 Maths and English or education equivalent.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Experience working in a healthcare, social care organisation/setting or service industry requiring people contact.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working within a maternity or neonatal health care environment.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Good communication skills (written and verbal).
- Demonstrates ability to work within a team
- Able to carry out well defined routine tasks.
- Able to work on own initiative, following direction/supervision by a Registered Healthcare Practitioner.
- Able to relate well with patients/relatives/visitors/ Colleagues/the multi-disciplinary team and wider Trust staff.
Desirable criteria
- Computer skills.
- Taking and recording vital signs and other clinical skills within scope of job role
- Equivalent knowledge, skills and competency to undertake Band 3 skills within a healthcare setting
