Senior Locally Employed Doctor in Neonatology

MT04

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for 2 posts based at the tertiary-level NICU, in the Oxford Road campus of Newborn Services, St Mary's Hospital. St. Mary’s is the tertiary referral centre for high-risk Obstetric and Neonatal care with over 10000 deliveries per year, taking referrals from all across the NW. Our busy NICU has 69 cots and receives over 1000 admissions annually, with a mix of complex surgical, preterm and specialist medical babies needing multi-disciplinary input.

This post has been found to be particularly suitable to trainees, fellows and post-CCT candidates keen to pursue a career in tertiary Neonatal Medicine or those with a special interest in Neonatology. The post provides unmatched experience and skills necessary for consolidating confidence and supporting evidence for CESR applications (for overseas candidates). As we are co-located with Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital, there may be opportunity to focus on and enhance experience in desired subspeciality domains.

The post promises excellent training in Neonatology with first-class facilities and IT, research experience, opportunities to develop skills in management in governance, a friendly atmosphere and close working arrangements with highly trained neonatal nurses, allied health professionals and many other specialists.

It is essential that applicants have a minimum of six months’ previous experience in tertiary Neonates in the UK or Ireland. Full MRCPCH or equivalent level is highly desirable.

Main duties of the job

To provide a clinical service in Neonatal Medicine and Surgery, to provide cover for labour ward and the postnatal wards, and to work closely with the Consultants, other middle-grade and junior-grade doctors, nurse practitioners and nursing staff. To be actively involved in the NICU Education programme, and to support doctors and nurse practitioners in training.

Key Duties and Responsibilities in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit:

  • Training and experience in the resuscitation and management of sick, extremely preterm, specialist medical and surgical infants on the Newborn Intensive Care Unit, working within the multidisciplinary team
  • Management of infants requiring intensive care, high dependency and special care
  • Experience of Neonatal outpatient follow up
  • Attendance at deliveries and in Postnatal Wards as necessary
  • Involvement in MDT antenatal counselling and planning meetings
  • Involvement in training and education for the blended team of junior doctors, nurse practitioners, physician associates and nursing staff
  • Participation in risk management processes, involvement in guideline production, research and audit
