Job overview

A fantastic opportunity has arisen within the Medical Directorate of the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust. We are looking to expand our current cadre of Strategic Medical Advisors. The position provides a “Doctor on call” function as well as fulfilling the Strategic Medical Advisor role when required. This will ensure appropriate clinical resources are available and utilised appropriately both at the scene of an incident and across the geographical footprint, ensuring the service maintains its core function. This extends to periods of excessive demand or service pressure due to issues within the wider health system. This can include providing clinical advice and support to colleagues working in complex incidents, liaising with strategic commanders and key regional stakeholders.

In terms of salary, this role would attract the equivalent of 2 Programmed Activities (PAs) based on NHS Consultant pay scales.

Main duties of the job

In additional to providing a 1:8 on call support, the role may require deployment to co-locate (within 2 hrs) if a Strategic Coordinating Group (SCG) is called.  There is a requirement to complete an annual training programme, including NWAS mandatory training, face to face training days and live exercises, totalling 5 days per annum.

We are looking for a dynamic individual who will be able to provide senior leadership and advice in the pre-hospital environment, up to and including major and mass casualty incidents. This post is ideal for candidates with credible clinical practice experience working at Consultant, GP Principal, or equivalent grade with a current full GMC licence to practice.  The postholder must live in the North West of England.   Mentorship and peer support will be provided to the successful applicant as part of the induction program.

Working for our organisation

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport.

Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.
We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
