Job overview

The successful candidate will participate in the provision of the general microbiology service. All Consultants report as general microbiologists and cover all areas including clinical calls, authorisation, infection prevention, ward rounds and meetings. 

SHH Microbiology Laboratory holds UKAS accreditation and provides comprehensive services to the population of Stockport and High Peak receiving a large and varied workload. Close working relationships with clinicians are maintained through weekly MDT meetings.

Applicants should possess the FRCPath, or a recognised equivalent.

Main duties of the job

(i)        Clinical

The appointee will liaise in a timely manner with clinicians, hospital staff, consultant microbiologists, infection prevention and general practitioners regarding the diagnosis and management of patients, including the provision of medical advice and attendance at MDT meetings/ ward rounds as appropriate.

(ii)       Laboratory

The appointee will be expected to contribute to the following:

  • Day to day supervision of diagnostic methods and examination of specimens
  • Interpretation and authorisation of results
  • Involvement in departmental policy development
  • The quality assurance performance within the department, including taking part in all relevant national external quality assurance (NEQAS) and EQA programmes
  • The maintenance of full accreditation with UKAS.
  • Business planning, including the assessment and introduction of new methods and forward planning for staff and equipment requirements

  • If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £41.50. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary

Professional qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full and Specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or equivalent date of interview.
Desirable criteria
  • FRCPath or evidence of equivalent qualification

Training

Essential criteria
  • Previous appointments that provided professional training in relevant clinical specialties and broad aspects of Microbiology

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical experience commensurate with training in specialty
  • Experience of clinical audit
Desirable criteria
  • An understanding of NHS management responsibilities of consultants. Attendance at an appropriate management course.
  • Evidence of management/leadership development

Research

Desirable criteria
  • Should be able to demonstrate research experience

Professional skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and relatives and with colleagues of all disciplines.
  • Should show an aptitude to developing leaderships skills to lead teams
  • Should be able to demonstrate ability to be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supervision of junior medical staff and relevant staff in other disciplines
