The APP is responsible for face-to-face clinical care at an advanced practice level in unscheduled emergency care, responding to emergencies on a response vehicle as an autonomous solo practitioner to our most unwell and complex patients. In addition to front-line response, APPs are expected to work at the Integrated Contact Centre within the Complex Incident Hub team, where they will identify and review complex incidents and coordinate the dispatch of specialist clinical resources. APPs also offer remote clinical advice and support to crews on scene, often to support time-critical and clinical decision making.

APPs will provide a face-to-face response as an advanced clinician to complex incidents, including but not limited to serious trauma, cardiac arrests, acute life-threatening medical conditions, complex mental health, and maternity emergencies.

Main duties of the job

APPs enhance our organisational response to significant and major incidents, supporting clinical leadership tasks as part of our incident response.

APPs will provide 24/7 coverage across a defined geographical area, although may be deployed to calls across the entire NWAS region. Postholders will operate as an autonomous practitioner utilising an advanced scope of practice and demonstrating clinical leadership and co-ordination skills in dealing with incidents or events, which may include liaison with ambulance service managers, other emergency services, specialist teams, and other healthcare professionals.

There is a process of formal internal and external education and training for this role. An MSc in advanced practice is essential for the APP role; however, applications are invited from those who have not yet achieved an MSc, but who are able to undertake higher education at level 7 while in post.

Closing date is midnight on Sunday 19th of October 2025.  Candidates who are shortlisted will be invited to complete an online clinical knowledge assessment. If successful at this stage, candidates will be invited to an in-person assessment centre on 13th of November 2025.

Working for our organisation

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year accident and emergency services to those in need of emergency medical treatment and transport.

Our highly skilled staff provide life-saving care to patients in the community and take people to hospital or a place of care if needed.
We also provide non-emergency patient transport services for those patients who require non-emergency transport to and from hospital and who are unable to travel unaided because of their medical condition or clinical need.

Alongside the other emergency services, we also work to ensure the safety of the public and treatment of patients in the event of a major incident.

We also deliver the NHS 111 service in the North West. NHS 111 replaced NHS Direct in 2013. This service was introduced to make it easier for people to access local NHS healthcare services in England. It provides non-emergency medical help fast, and is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
