Job overview

The clinical biochemistry and metabolic medicine department has extensive clinical responsibilities. It is responsible for the Metabolic Disease Unit, currently situated on day ward at the Broadgreen hospital site, which is used for the day case treatment of patients with metabolic bone disease or electrolyte disorders. The department is responsible for running two metabolic bone disease clinics each week and clinics in lipids and cardiovascular risk, nutrition disorders, Turners Syndrome, menopause, and renal stone disease. The department is also involved in research in rare bone metabolic disorders.

Approximately1242 is the number of new patients seen in clinics over 52 week period and this workload is shared by 4 consultants.

Department provides the National Alkaptonuria Service where patients from all over the UK are admitted, investigated, and treated. The National AKU Service.

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

Main Duties

1. To take the lead in managing and developing the Bone metabolic service.

2. To share responsibility at consultant level in the metabolic bone disease and lipid outpatient clinics.

3. To provide a clinical advisory service for Clinical Biochemistry in the Blood Sciences Department of Liverpool Clinical Laboratories (LcL).

4. To participate in multidisciplinary meetings related to metabolic medicine.

5. To lead the clinical governance meetings for the speciality

6. Providing consultant level clinical and training supervision of medical and other staff associated with the unit.

7. To help develop and maintain multidisciplinary clinical networks and care pathways appropriate to the evolving need of patients. This will include development of virtual consultations and engaging with, and involving, patient representative groups.

8. Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, the post-holder will be expected to observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.

9. All medical and dental staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with its Risk Management and Health and Safety Policies and with the guidelines of the General Medical Council’s Good Medicine Practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed clinician to join our consultant team. The new consultant will share the provision of outpatient clinics, including virtual and face to face clinics, in metabolic bone diseases and lipid disorders. The post holder will also be expected to lead and develop the bone metabolic services across the LUHFT as well as supporting the research in bone metabolism. Any other sub-specialist interest which dovetails with the requirements of the department and the hospital will be encouraged and supported. The candidate will also be supported to develop a research interest, with excellent opportunities to collaborate within the Trust and University.

The candidate will be expected to manage 4 bone metabolic and 1 lipid outpatient clinic per week. The successful applicant will join the other consultants to provide advice on the management of biochemical abnormalities in inpatients within LUHFT and provide advice and guidance to General Practitioners on a one in five rota.

The duties outlined above are not intended to be exhaustive and may change as the needs of the department alter in line with current agendas. This job description will be subject to periodic review and amendment in accordance with the needs of the Trust.

The consultant appointed for this job will be provided with office space (to share with colleagues), personal computer available and a secretary to support admin work.

Audit and Clinical Governance

The post holder will be expected to follow national governance standards as set out in the Healthcare Commission document Standards for Better Health. In addition, the post holder will actively participate in the Trust’s clinical governance strategy. Consultants are expected to provide a lead for, and undertake, quality improvement and clinical audit. The post-holder will be required to comply with the principles of research governance and Caldecott requirements.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification
  • MRCP or show evidence of equivalent qualification
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council, or be eligible for registration within six months of interview
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
