Consultant Stroke Physicians

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

Liverpool University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint 2 Consultant Stroke Physicians to work within the North Mersey Stroke Service based at Aintree, together with providing sessions at one of our spoke sites (full-time 12PA). Applications for less than full-time working will be considered.

From September 2022 Stroke services across North Mersey have been fully integrated creating a single North Mersey Stroke Service at Aintree Hospital which is co-located with thrombectomy services provided by The Walton Centre. Post-72-hour stroke care and rehabilitation will be provided at Aintree, Southport and Broadgreen Hospitals.

Aintree Stroke Centre is within the Department of Medicine for Older People and Stroke. There are consultant geriatricians across our sites providing inpatient care and specialist services including falls, Movement disorders, osteoporosis, orthogeriatric liaison, and community and frailty services.

Applicants must be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register and should have CCT in Geriatric Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine (or equivalent), or be within six months of this at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for dynamic and enthusiastic individuals to join our existing team. Our team provide hyperacute stroke care and rehabilitation to approximately 1500 stroke admissions per year.  We provide 24/7 thrombolysis and a 7-day rapid assessment service for TIA’s. Telemedicine is used for the delivery of thrombolysis out of hours. Thrombectomy is provided at the adjacent Walton Centre and expanded to 24/7 from October 2021.

Role will cover inpatient and outpatient clinics across the Aintree site, including the Stroke Emergency Assessment Centre (EAC), Wards 32 & 33.

Working for our organisation

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The merger provides an opportunity to reconfigure services in a way that provides the best healthcare services to the city and improves the quality of care and health outcomes that patients experience.

The Trust runs Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool University Dental Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

It serves a core population of around 630,000 people across Merseyside as well as providing a range of highly specialist services to a catchment area of more than two million people in the North West region and beyond.
