University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHLG) is seeking to appoint an Associate Non-Executive Director to join the Board of one of the largest healthcare groups in the country. This is an exciting developmental opportunity for an individual who is motivated by public service and wishes to gain first-hand experience of Board-level leadership, governance and decision-making within the NHS.

UHLG brings together Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, serving communities across Liverpool, Cheshire and Merseyside through shared leadership, services and ambition.

The Associate Non-Executive Director role has been designed for individuals who aspire to progress into substantive Non-Executive Director positions in the future but who may not yet have Board-level non-executive experience. The successful candidate will receive structured development, mentoring and support from the Chair and experienced Non-Executive Directors whilst gaining valuable insight into how effective NHS Boards operate.

As an Associate Non-Executive Director, you will attend Board meetings in an observational and developmental capacity, developing your understanding of NHS governance, assurance, strategy, finance, workforce, quality and population health. You will have opportunities to contribute constructively to discussions, ask thoughtful questions and bring your own perspective, experience and insight to Board deliberations.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who can broaden the diversity of thought around our Board by bringing different perspectives, lived experience, community understanding or professional expertise. We welcome applicants from all sectors and backgrounds, including those whose career pathways have not followed traditional NHS leadership routes.

Main duties of the job

As Associate Non-Executive Director, you will:

•             Attend Board meetings primarily to observe, learn and understand how effective NHS Boards operate.

•             Build confidence in contributing constructively to Board discussions, with support from the Chair and experienced Non-Executive Directors.

•             Develop knowledge of NHS governance, assurance, quality, finance, workforce, strategy and population health.

•             Bring perspective, curiosity and lived or professional insight to support inclusive and effective governance.

•             Participate in structured induction, mentoring, reflective learning and feedback to support future progression.

Associate Non-Executive Director have a duty to, and will:

•             The Associate Non-Executive Director role is designed to provide exposure to these duties. Associate NEDs will not hold statutory director responsibilities, will not vote at Board meetings and will not count towards Board or committee quorum.

•             Uphold the highest standards of governance, integrity and public service, acting in the best interests of patients, staff, members and local communities.

•             Provide independent challenge, scrutiny and assurance in relation to strategy, performance, quality, risk, finance and workforce matters.

•             Contribute to the development, testing and delivery of the Group strategy and the long-term ambitions of UHLG and its constituent Trusts.

•             Support effective Board decision-making through independent judgement, constructive questioning and a focus on evidence, assurance and outcomes.

•             Champion equality, diversity and inclusion, and promote the values and behaviours expected of a modern NHS Board.

•             Work effectively with governors, partners and stakeholders, supporting openness, accountability and trust in the Group’s governance arrangements.

NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHL Group) was formed in November 2024 bringing together Liverpool University  Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT) and Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust (LWH). Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (LHCH) joined the Group in October 2025.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Associate Non-Executive Director role is a developmental, non-statutory position designed to provide structured exposure to NHS Board governance, decision-making and assurance.

The role supports individuals who have the motivation and potential to become future NHS Non-Executive Directors, but who do not yet have substantive Board-level non-executive experience.

Associate Non-Executive Directors will attend Board meetings primarily in an observational and learning capacity, with opportunities to contribute to discussion as confidence, insight and experience develop.

The post holder will be supported by the Chair and experienced Non-Executive Directors through induction, mentoring, reflective learning and ongoing development.

We are particularly keen to hear from individuals who would broaden Board insight and bring perspectives, lived experience or professional expertise that may be underrepresented at Board level.

This appointment does not guarantee progression to a substantive Non-Executive Director role; future appointments would be subject to open and competitive recruitment processes.
