An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Porter to join our team here at Ormskirk Hospital 

Porters at Ormskirk Hospital perform a variety of essential duties: 

Patient and Equipment Transportation: 

  • Moving patients in beds and chairs, as well as transporting medical equipment and furniture between departments. 

Logistics and Deliveries: 

  • Transferring specimens, pharmacy boxes, and other important items throughout the hospital. 

Waste Collection: 

  • Collecting various types of waste, including potentially hazardous materials. 

General Support: 

  • Providing assistance and direction to patients and visitors. 

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will assist the Portering team leader providing a customer focused service.
  • The post holder will deliver an efficient and effective portering service to patients, visitors, and all wards / departments.
  • To ensure the patient environment is maintained to a high standard and safe working practices adhere to in all aspects of environmental/ hygiene management

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Ensure economic use of all materials
  • Ensure good practise to minimise waste

Quality Management

  • Ensure good customer relations working with patients and other groups of staff
  • Maintain and improve all aspects of the service
  • Participate, as appropriate, in staff involvement group for all aspects of quality

Hygiene Management

  • Ensure compliance with all legal requirements of food safety
  • Maintain high standards of personal hygiene as advised by infection control

Human Resources Management

  • Ensure compliance with all trust policies
  • Provide guidance and assistance to new or existing members of staff
  • To attend training course as required
  • To attend training courses as required and participate in annual refresher sessions in accordance with your personal development programme

Operational Duties

  • The collection of refuse including clinical, domestic, confidential, special and recyclable waste from wards and departments as and when required
  • The brushing of all hospital entrances to ensure high standards
  • To maintain a safe and secure environment for staff, patients and visitors to include regular security inspections and attendance at security incidents. To respond in the event of the activation of the fire alarm system
  • Issuing of keys
  • Safe patient movement (including unescorted x-ray and ECG patients)
  • Movement of case notes in line with the trust policy regarding confidentiality and data protection
  • The collection of soiled linen and the distribution of clean linen
  • The movement of furniture and equipment in wards and offices when required
  • Delivery of meals, stores and provisions to wards by means of using road vehicles both electrical and fuel powered means
  • To carry out daily safety checks on meals delivery vehicles
  • To safely collect and transport bloods and specimens to the labs
  • Transport blood to and from pathology and theatre
  • Assisting with the transfer of bodies from wards to the mortuary (ODGH only to arrange and liaise with relatives who may request to view the bosies. To prepare the bodies for viewing and identification. SDGH to open mortuary out of hours for undertakers)
  • Store keeping including storage and stock rotation
  • Postal delivery/collection as required
  • Medical gas checking and replacement
  • Car Parking duties (includes issuing car park tokens)
  • To comply with pharmacy work procedures as require
